The E5 Trans-Alp
Day 1: Rendezvous in Munich Airport. KE Land Only services begin with a single, timed group transfer (2.5 hours) to the group hotel in the beautiful little Bavarian village of Oy-Mittelberg. We meet with our guide and have a briefing on the week ahead. Dinner and overnight at the group hotel.
Day 2: After a short transfer to Oberstdorf, Germany's famous and most southerly Winter resort we start the E5 climbing to our first hut, the Kemptner Huette at 1846m. where we stay overnight. Walking time: approximately 3.5 - 4 hours. Ascent: 850m.
Day 3: We climb to a ridge forming the border between Germany and Austria and descend to Holzgau in Tyrol. We then have a short transfer and our back packs are taken up to the next hut by cable car while we enjoy the hike up to the Memminger Huette located at 2242 m. 6 - 7 hours total walking. +950m./-850m.
Day 4: Today's hike takes us past an alpine lake surrounded by meadows before starting the ascent to the Seescharte pass (2599m). Crossing this pass, a long and highly scenic descent takes us to the village of Zams where we stay overnight in a pleasant guest house. 6 - 7 hours. +420m./-1800m.
Day 5: We take the Venet gondola up to 2208m. to regain our lost altitude and follow a ridge crossing several summits and offering stupendous 360 views. Reaching the Pitzal Valley we have a short transfer and again send our backpacks up in the hut luggge lift while we walk beside a waterfall and up to the glacier where the Braunschweiger Huette is located at 2760m. 6 - 7 hours. +1150m./-800m.
Day 6: Today we reach the highest point on the E5 at the Rettenbach Ferner (2820 m). The trail is quite challenging with some scrambling. From here we descend to the famous Oetztal where the stone age man was found preserved in the ice. We stay tonight in a comfortable guest house equipped with spa and sauna. 6 - 7 hours. +300m./-400m.
Day 7: We start the day with a short transfer to the Timmelsjoch (2600m) from where we hike from Austria to Italy dropping down to the small village of Moos. After lunch we ascend (2 hours) to the Pfandler Alm where Andreas Hofer hid with his family from Napolean's army during the Tyrolean resistance. We overnight here and weather permitting can enjoy a barbeque. 6 - 7 hours. +700m / -1470m.
Day 8: For our last day on the E5 we hike across alpine meadows to the Hinteregg Alm (1990m). where we have a spectacular view to the Ortler (3890m), the highest peak in the Eastern Alps. After another 1.5 hours of hiking we reach the gondola that takes us down to the medieval town of Meran and the end of our trans-Alp journey. here we check into our comfortable hotel. 4 - 5 hours. +850m / -200m.
Day 9: We have a scenic drive back across the Alps to our starting point of Oy-Mittelberg. On the way we will stop at Bozen to visit the 5000 year old 'ice man' found mummified in the Schnalstal glacier. Arriving in Oy-Mittelberg we check back into our guesthouse and enjoy a celebratory dinner.
Day 10: After breakfast at the hotel we have a group transfer to Munich airport where KE Land Only package services end.
This holiday involves going to moderately high altitude. During the course of your trip you will reach altitudes in excess of 2500 metres. Most people will have no difficulty with this level of altitude but before coming on the holiday, we recommend you read the advice on trekking at altitude.
