- A classic journey and magical cultural experience
- `Explore More` - the finest adventure holidays on the planet
From Addis Ababa to Nairobi, this is one of the great overland journeys of Africa, requiring rugged 4WD vehicles to overcome the challenging road conditions. After sightseeing in Addis, we set off through the tropical forest and scattered coffee plantations of Southern Ethiopia. We then spend a week at several locations in the remote and little-known wilderness area of the Lower Omo Valley. Here, we visit an amazing diversity of ethnic groups, including the stick-fighting Surma, the Mursi with their clay lip plates, the body-painting Karo and the ornately coiffured and decorated Hamer. Crossing into Kenya, our first stops are beside Lake Turkana, a vast body of water lying within a desert and sustained only by the inflow of the Omo River. Continuing our southward progress, we make time for further game drives at the Samburu National Park and at Lake Nakuru. This is an epic international expedition into one of East Africa's most interesting and least accessible regions.
This trip is one of our ‘Explore More' range of outstanding adventure holidays which we are running in conjunction with our friends at Allibert and Hauser (France and Germany's leading adventure travel operators). The trips we have chosen for this range are undoubtedly some of the finest adventures on the planet. They are also ‘specialist' and will appeal to those who have ‘been there, done that' in many parts of the world and are now looking for something new. The cosmopolitan nature of the groups will be an important part of the Explore More experience!
Is this holiday for you?
On this trip we will be travelling into a remote, tribal corner of East Africa and making a crossing from Ethiopia to Kenya that is still relatively rarely undertaken. The climate will be harsh at times, hot and humid, then hot and dry. In places, the roads are likely to be appalling and if it rains they may be close to impassable. This is not a tough trekking trip - in fact it has very little significant walking. However, long days in 4WD vehicles on bumpy roads, will make this trip challenging for everyone. It is most important to be able to maintain a relaxed approach and to keep a sense of humour at all times. Because this is a remote and 'far out' trip, we have given it the DEMANDING grade.
