Famous for its beaches, jungles and extravagant wildlife which includes caymans, howler monkeys and toucans, this tropical country is also a great place for active family adventures. Our tour takes us to Poas Volcano, with its humming birds and picturesque crater lagoon, then on to stunning wildlife haven of Tortuguero on the Caribbean coast. Canoe and boat tours take us through the myriad of canals, and we may see the giant leatherback and endangered green turtles on the beaches here. Leaving the Caribbean we have a fun and thrilling morning rafting before travelling to the fiery Arenal Volcano, one of the most continually active in the world. Here, we have the option to sample the Ecothermales Hot Springs and see the lava sweep from the volcano. Sailing across the lake we take a jeep up to the cloud forest reserve at Monteverde, where there is the 'Sky Walk' canopy-level walk-way for us to explore, as well as the wonderful Selvatura Park, with its outrageous butterflies, reptiles and amphibians. Heading south to Manuel Antonio National Park on the Pacific coast, we have some time to relax on the beach before continuing down to Dominical. A horse-ride to the Nauyaca waterfalls and a search in the forest for the elusive Resplendent Queztal rounds off this excellent family adventure and wildlife rich holiday.

Activities included in this trip are trekking, horse riding, a tree top tour, swimming, boat rides at Tortuguero and white water rafting, plus touring and visits to key Costa Rican tourist attractions. The trekking elements of the itinerary are not difficult and are mostly along well-established trails through forest. The rafting will be on an exciting, but not outrageous, ‘whitewater' river. The grade varies from 2 (straightforward) to Grade 3 (exciting). There are lots of easy reaches in between the rapids and this does make the overall run quite manageable for novices or youngsters. There are optional extra activities available at various points on the tour and these can be ordered and paid for locally. Throughout the trip we stay in comfortable hotel or lodge accommodation. Several of the places we stay provide opportunities for swimming. This trip is suitable for active families with children of age 8 and up.
