The Garden Route - Family Adventure South Africa
South Africa, Family, 12 days - from £1,495 (land only) - from €1,870 (land only) - from $2,615 (land only)
Day 1: Arriving at Port Elizabeth airport, KE Land Only package services begin with a group transfer to the hotel near the Summerstrand beach in Port Elizabeth. After a briefing with the guide we have the rest of the afternoon free to explore. We can visit the aquarium or relax on the beach.
Day 2: A relaxed morning before our transfer to Addo Elephant National Park (2hrs). After lunch we have the option of a game drive (with great wildlife sightings possible) into a private reserve which includes dinner and a night drive (very exciting!). Or we can enjoy the pool and activities at our accommodation.
Day 3: We have an early morning and afternoon game drive in Addo Elephant Park today. We see the elephants in their natural habitat from the lone males to the family groups with hopefully a few very adorable young. Today will not disappoint! Optional horse-ride safari or swimming in the pool in the heat of the day.
Day 4: Transfer to Storms River mouth in the Tsitsikamma National Park (3hrs). We walk through the forest to the famous suspension bridge across the river mouth. After lunch we can enjoy the beach or enjoy an optional tree top canopy adventure. In the late afternoon we transfer to Plettenberg Bay (1hr) for the next 3 nights.
Day 5: We have a full free day here at Plettenberg Bay. We can enjoy the swimming pool and facilities at the accommodation, or walk down to the blue flag status beach. For the wildlife enthusiast there are optional visits to the World of Birds and/or Monkey Land.
Day 6: Another day is spent in this idyllic spot. Again we can choose to enjoy the beach or walk around town. There are more wildlife opportunities - we can watch the Radical Raptors show and/or visit the elephant sanctuary where we can ride the elephants, feed them and brush them down.
Day 7: Our first stop this morning is a town called Wilderness where we enjoy some easy canoeing on the Touws river to some waterfalls. Lunch is on the river banks in the rainforest. We then transfer (1hr) inland to Oudtshoorn to the Ostrich Farm. We learn and have a reasonably hands on experience with these hilarious birds.
Day 8: In the very early morning we join the meerkat tour. These mesmerising little animals are enchanting and we watch them in the wild as they go about their morning business - just a superb experience! We then transfer back to the Garden Route to Hermanus via Mossel Bay and the Post Office Tree (5hrs).
Day 9: Hermanus is regarded as one of the best places in the world for shore-based whale watching (Jun-Nov season). We can increase our chances of spotting these with a tour, or we can take part in several other activities available here.
Day 10: Continuing along the Whale Coast via Gordon's Bay we arrive in Cape Town (3-4hrs). The afternoon is free to explore Table Mountain via the cable car and in fine weather there are some terrific views from this famous land mark.
Day 11: We tour around the Cape Peninsula today. We take the Seal Island boat cruise and get a close sightings of the Cape Fur Seal. We then take the Chapman's Peak drive route through to Cape Point. We return to Cape town via Simon's Town to see the splendid African Penguins - another unforgettable experience, prefect for our last day.
Day 12: The majority of the day is free for shopping and relaxing at the waterfront, or for half-day optional activities such as a visit to Robben Island. In the late afternoon there is a group transfer to Cape Town Airport where KE Land Only package services end.
