King of the Vikings - Family Holiday in Iceland
Holiday Itinerary
Day 1: Rendezvous at the group hotel in Reykjavik. KE Land Only package services begin with overnight at the hotel. A single group transfer will be arranged, usually mid afternoon, from Keflavik Airport.
Day 2: We depart Reykjavik and travel to Thingvellir National Park to see the famous Geysir with it's water sputting, the picturesque Gullfoss waterfall and visit a reconstructed farmhouse from the Viking period. We overnight in a guesthouse on the edge of the volcanic area.
Day 3: Today we drive across the Fjallabak area. We stop in Landmannalaugar with it's contrasting reds, white and orange hills. Here we have a dip in the hot springs an incredible experience. We have a short walk to the Eldgia fissure and the Ofaera waterfall. In our 4WD drive vehicle we continue northwards over rivers and streams to our mountain hut for the night.
Day 4: Continuing on our journey we travel to Skaftafell, arriving mid-morning. We have time to visit the Svartifoss waterfall before we continue to Glacier Lagoon with its icebergs carved from the glacier. We have a boat trip through the icebergs with their beautiful iridescent blue colour. Overnight guesthouse.
Day 5: We drive to the village of Skogar and the Dyrholaey rock arch a beautiful section of rocky coastline which is a bird sanctuary for eider duck and arctic terns. But most importantly we can see the puffin here swooping from their nests in their hundreds. Visiting the Skogarfoss waterfall we drive the hotel for the night.
Day 6: Today we walk on the glacier at Solheimajokull. Exploring water cauldrons, waterways and ice features on the glacier we experience a whole new world of ice. All safety equipment including crampons, ice axes is provided along with a specialist guide. We then return to Reykjavik via the Seljalandsfoss. Overnight guesthouse Reykjavik.
Day 7: From Reykjavik we go caving through lava tubes and other volcanic features. All safety equipment provided. We then can participate in the high ropes course in the Nesjavellir rift valley. Overnight Reykjavik.
Day 8: KE Land Only package services end with breakfast at the hotel. There is a single group transfer to Keflavik Airport, usually at around lunchtime, time allowing we will stop off at the Blue Lagoon on the way to the airport for a quick dip!
