The name Tenerife means ‘white mountain' and refers to the island's centrepiece, Mount Teide, which is quite often capped with snow. At 3718 metres, this dormant volcano is the highest peak in the whole of Spain and presents an obvious challenge to all keen walkers who visit the island. Tenerife is the biggest and, in terms of its landscapes, the most varied of the Canary Islands and is known as ‘the island of eternal spring'. Its very favourable climate attracts several million holidaymakers each year, but few of these sun-seeking tourists venture inland from the coastal strip. This is their loss and our gain, as we explore a number of quiet and contrasting hiking trails, from the lunar landscape of the Teide National Park to the verdant laurel forest and coastal views of Anaga. One of the highlights of this brilliant family walking adventure is the night we spend at the cosy Refugio Altavista, high on Mount Teide, followed by the hike to the top of the peak as the early morning light casts a giant triangular shadow across the island. Other highlights of this fun-packed family adventure include a dolphin-watching boat trip, our visit to the Cueva del Viento, one of the world's biggest lava tubes, and the chance to swim in the sea-water pools at the old port of Garachico. With comfortable and characterful accommodation and all meals included, this is the very best of the Canary Islands.
Is this holiday for you?
This fantastic holiday has been designed for families and includes several days of walking on the island of Tenerife. This is a holiday for active families with children who enjoy regular weekend hill walking adventures. During this holiday we have 6 nights in comfortable hotels (in 2 locations - Vilaflor and Los Realejos) and a single night at the Refugio Altavista on Mount Teide, at an elevation of 3200 metres. Note that our access to this refuge is facilitated by using the Mount Teide cable car. The optional hike to the top of Mount Teide from this refuge (and the subsequent descent to the road) will take at least 5 hours and is the toughest day-walk of the holiday. Several of the day-walks are much easier, at around 3 to 4 hours of walking on good trails and paths. Descending the Masca Gorge to the sea has short sections of easy scrambling. Otherwise, the walking presents no technical difficulty.
