From the top of the highest mountain, Pico de Las Nieves, to the delights of the coast, and from pretty mountain villages to vibrant, historic Las Palmas; this fantastic walking week in Gran Canaria is crammed full of glorious contrasts. Described as a continent in miniature, the island boasts a dramatic variation in terrain. The mountainous interior is a gift for keen walkers and its eternal spring/summer climate provides a welcome and revitalising escape from a gloomy dark winter. Basing ourselves in 3 different locations around the island we will have access to a mouth-watering variety of day walks; so we can be sure to experience the real Gran Canaria, a million miles away from the beachfront tourism. Our holiday begins on the coast with 3 days at the bustling little yacht harbour of Puerto de Mogan, nicknamed the Venice of the Canaries and arguably the most picturesque resort on the island. Moving up into the mountains, the pretty village of San Bartolome provides the perfect location for the second half of this holiday as we embark on some superb walking in the central massif, including the trek to the island's highest point, Pico de las Nieves (1951m). Our accommodation even has a small spa and sauna to which we will have free access! After a delightful 6 days of mountains and sea, we end our walking week with another side of this island, the colourful and vibrant capital, Las Palmas, where we have the afternoon free to explore the ancient streets of Vegueta, a fascinating historic area of the city, or relax on the award winning beach as Las Canteras. This week-long walking escape covers all the hiking highlights of sunny Gran Canaria.
Is this holiday for you?
This is not a sustained trekking holiday but a series of day walks any of which, can be considered as optional. The walks themselves are on a wide variety of terrain including rocky mountain paths, goat trails, classic camino reals, forest trails and quiet roads. The programme includes five walks of approximately 5 - 7 hours allowing plenty of time for sightseeing and photographs and one shorter walk around the Bandama crater on the final day, allowing for an afternoon of R&R in Las Palmas. The walking on this holiday should be well within the capabilities of all active hill and back country walkers.
