In Search of Genghis Khan
Day 1: Arriving in Ulaanbaatar we are met by our guide who will arrange the transfer to the group's hotel. KE Land Only package services begin with a guided tour of the city. In the evening we have dinner and stay overnight at the group hotel.
Day 2: We drive approximately 1 hour to the Terelj National Park. In the foothills of the southern Khentii Mountains, the park is famous for its rock formations. We will take a walk to the Aryabala meditation temple before continuing our drive to our overnight accommodation in a traditional Mongolian Ger beside the river Tuul.
Day 3: After breakfast we drive to Hurhiin and from there, hike via Manzushir monastery to the top of Tsetsee Gun Peak (2258m) through a landscape of granite cliffs and tors surrounded by a forest of Siberian Larch. We then drive to the Zorgol Khairkhan mountains where we stay overnight in a tented camp.
Day 4: We will start our 3-day mini trek in the footsteps of Genghis Khan across the Gobi Steppe from Zorgol Kghairkhkan to Senjit. Each day we will walk around 15 kilometres and en route we can discover secluded petroglyphs of extraordinary quality and view the wildlife such as Siberian ibex, gazelles and the rare Argali sheep. Each evening we will make a camp and enjoy a night under the stars.
Day 5: We continue our trek today, crossing the open grassland of the Uushgiin Steppes, where we are likely to meet nomadic people at their yurt camps. Overnight camp.
Day 6: Today we complete our mini trek reaching the 20 kilometre long dunes of Arburd on the northern edge of the Gobi Desert. Overnight camp.
Day 7: We are back in the tour vehicle today driving to Khustai National Park which is a protected area for the Takhi (Przewalski`s wild horse). Here we stay overnight in a traditional ger or yurt.
Day 8: We walk to the beautiful Moilt Valley which is famous for its wildlife and flowers. On the return hike we will stop to visit neolithic standing stones and grave sites and the stone carvings known as the Ongot Monument. Overnight in the ger.
Day 9: After breakfast we will visit the runis of the Erdene Khamba Monastery and hike to Elsen Tasarkhai. Overnight in a traditional ger.
Day 10: Today we drive to Karakorum, the ancient capital of Mongolia and the home of Genghis Khan. We check in at our ger camp here before visiting the 16th century Erdenezuu Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Day 11: After relaxed breakfast we return to Ulaanbaatar with a drive of around 5 or 6 hours across the wide open steppe, framed by rolling hills. Arriving in the modern-day capital we check in at our hotel. This evening we will watch a 'folk' performance and enjoy a farewell dinnner. Overnight at the group hotel.
Day 12: KE Land Only package services end after breakfast at the hotel. A complimentary airport transfer is provided.
