Wanderlust 50 Best Trips 2013Starting out from the former Silk Road oasis and trading post of Kashgar, this radical trekking adventure forges a route across high passes beneath the twin Pamirs peaks of Kongur (7720m) and Mustagh Ata (7646m). With a baggage caravan of camels, we hike for 2 weeks into the world of nomadic herders who graze their flocks on the highest pastures during the summer months. Venturing where few outsiders have ever travelled, we will have the chance to meet these Uighur, Tadjik and Kirghiz people at their yurt encampments. This brilliant trek leads through rocky gorges, across high plateaux and via isolated lakes to the Yango and Torbulung cols, close to 5000 metres, where we can enjoy wonderful views of the ice-fields above us and of the arid steppes of Xinjiang far below. This sensational trek across ‘the roof of the world' also takes us to the basecamps for both Kongur and Mustagh Ata.

Explore MoreThis trip is one of our ‘Explore More' range of outstanding adventure holidays which we are running in conjunction with our friends at Allibert (France's leading adventure travel operators). The trips we have chosen for this range are undoubtedly some of the finest adventures on the planet. They are also ‘specialist' and will appeal to those who have ‘been there, done that' in many parts of the world and are now looking for something new. The cosmopolitan nature of the groups will be an important part of the Explore More experience!

Is this holiday for you?

This is a 2 week trek into a remote region where the group including support staff, has to be entirely self sufficient. We follow trails of the nomadic herders who inhabit this region of the Pamirs. However, the terrain underfoot will vary from distinct tracks over grassland to rocky paths and loose scree. During the trek there are several high passes to cross and several camps near or above 4000 metres. We have given this trip a reasonably high grade to reflect the remoteness and high altitude aspects of the holiday. The holiday is be suitable for experienced trekkers with a good level of fitness and a strong sense of adventure. It is not suitable for first-time trekkers.
