Overlooked by many travellers to Central America, El Salvador is the smallest country in the region and one of the most charming. It has everything you would expect; Spanish colonial towns, cloud forest trails, an indigenous culture, unspoiled Pacific Ocean beaches and more than 20 volcanic peaks. Our great new multi-activity holiday begins in the west, with horse-back riding and mountain biking on Cerro Cuyanunsul and continues in the same theme as we hike to the top of Volcan Ilamatepec (2381m) which dramatically erupted as recently as October 2005. Detouring to the Honduras border, we also make the short and easy ascent to El Pital (2730m), El Salvador's high point. Heading east our multi-activity exploration of El Salvador continues as we kayak in crater lakes, enjoy a city tour of San Salvador, overnight on a coffee plantation and climb more volcanoes, including the challenging Volcan Chaparrastique (2129m). After all of this, you'll be ready for a couple of days on the beach at El Cuco, with a surfing lesson thrown in!
Is this holiday for you?
It is difficult to give an accurate grade to such a diverse trip. During the course of the holiday there will be the opportunity for horse-riding, mountain biking, kayaking, surfing and hiking. All of these activities are at a level where previous experience is not required (although you must know how to ride a bike for the mountain biking). The hikes are all fairly short with the exception of the ascent of Volcan Chaparrastique which is a full day. Taking everything into consideration we have graded this trip in our MODERATE range. Participants should be fit and active and most importantly have the spirit of adventure.
