Highlights of El Salvador

Day 1: Rendezvous at Comalpa International Airport on the outskirts of San Salvador. KE Land Only package services begin with a group transfer to the group hotel in San Salvador.
Day 2: A 1.5hr transfer takes us to Juayua. We will be kitted out with mountain bikes and helmets and drive up onto the peak of Cerro Cuyanunsul. The 23-kilometre descent to Juayua is a lot of fun and does not involve technical mountain biking. Those not wishing to bike can take a short pony-trek. In the afternoon, we hike for an hour to some geysers and hot springs. Overnight at coffee planters lodge.
Day 3: Today we have a morning hike to the crater of Volcan Ilamatepec (2381m), El Salvador's highest volcano. Then, in the afternoon, we visit Lake Coatepeque where we will have the option to do some kayaking. Tonight we will stay in basic forest bungalows in the Cerro Verde National Park.
Day 4: We start the day with a 3 hour hike to the top of Volcan Izalco (1952m), from which point the views extend to the sea. In the afternoon, we have a scenic drive northwards to El Pital and the mountain lodge of Miramundo.
Day 5: We have an easy hike to the summit of El Pital (2730m), from where we can look across to both Honduras and the volcanic peaks of Guatemala. Descending to the colourful town of La Palma, we have lunch and some free time to explore amongst the local arts and handicrafts shops. Overnight in La Palma.
Day 6: Today, we will have a hike into the Los Chintos area, to see the lava flow and rock formations of the 'Petrified Forest'. We also visit the huge crater of El Boqueron, before continuing our drive to San Salvador, where we overnight in a hotel.
Day 7: In the morning, we have a guided tour of the churches, palaces, museums and theatre in the old part of the El Salvadorean capital. The rest of the day is free for relaxing or independent sightseeing. A second night in San Salvador.
Day 8: After a short transfer, we hike on Guazapa Volcano (1438m) which is just to the north of San Salvador. Here, we can see artefacts from the Civil War which took place in El Salvador during the 1980's. After our hike, we drive to Suchitoto and check in at our hotel.
Day 9: A day of sightseeing in the lakeside town of Suchitoto. There is the option to take a boat ride and to visit the Isla los Pagaros by boat. We spend a second night at the hotel in Suchitoto.
Day 10: In the morning, we drive to San Vicente and make the ascent through coffee plantations and then cloud forest to the higher of Volcan Chinchontepeq's (2173m) two summits. We stay tonight in mountain 'cabanas' below the volcano.
Day 11: This morning we visit a large sulphur lake which is located inside the crater of the volcano Tecapa. We first hike up to the crater rim and then down to the lake (approximately 2 hours walking). The remainder of the day is at leisure. We spend a second night at the cabanas.
Day 12: Today we head to the port of La Union from where we take a boat out to the Gulf of Fonseca. We pass picturesque fishing villages, stopping to visit Isla Meanguera and the quiet island of Zacatillo, where we will take lunch. In the afternoon we return to shore and drive for around 1hr to the beach of El Cuco, our base for the night.
Day 13: After yesterday's tough hike, we enjoy a day of relaxation at the beach with the option of surfing under the guidance of an expert instructor. We spend a second night at our beach hotel.
Day 14: Our final half-day hike is to one of the two summits of Volcan Conchagua, which provides us with superb views over the coast of El Salvador and the Gulf of Fonseca. We spend a final night at the beach hotel.
Day 15: After breakfast, we transfer to San Salvador's Comalpa International Airport, where KE Land Only package services end.
This holiday involves going to moderately high altitude. During the course of your trip you will reach altitudes in excess of 2500 metres. Most people will have no difficulty with this level of altitude but before coming on the holiday, we recommend you read the advice on trekking at altitude.
