Geography

Burma is the largest country in mainland Southeast Asia, and the 40th-largest in the world. It is bordered to the northwest by Bangladesh and Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh of India to the northwest. Its north and northeastern border straddles the Tibet and Yunnan regions of China. It is bounded by Laos and Thailand to the southeast. Burma has 1,930 kilometres (1,200 miles) of coastline along the Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea to the southwest and the south, which forms one quarter of its total perimeter.

The Irrawaddy River, Burma's longest river, nearly 2,170 kilometres (1,348 mi) long, flows into the Gulf of Martaban. The majority of Burma's population lives in the Irrawaddy valley, which is situated between the Rakhine Yoma and the Shan Plateau.

Time Zone

The time in Burma is GMT +7 hours.

Language

The national language of Burma is Burmese. Most people involved with tourists speak some English. Outside of the main cities, however, few ordinary Burmese speak English and it is well worth the effort of learning a few simple phrases and common greetings. Very few tourists make the effort to learn any Burmese. So, it will really be appreciated if you have a go.

Climate

Myanmar has three seasons, the 'cold' season, from October to February, when the average temperature is between 20-24ºC, the 'hot' season, from March to May, with average temperatures of around 30-35ºC and the wet (monsoon) season, from May to October. Yangon is more prone to showers than Mandalay and Bagan, further north, whilst the climate around Inle Lake is pleasant all year round. Night-time temperatures can fall as low as 15ºC in January.

Visa Requirements

A valid passport (with at least 6 months remaining validity) is required for this trip. Visas must be applied for in advance of your holiday from the Embassy of Myanmar in your home country. Up-to-date information will be sent to you when we confirm your booking.

Vaccinations

You should attend your own doctor and dentist for a check-up. Your doctor will have access to the most up to date information on the required vaccinations for the country you are visiting. In general we recommend vaccinations against the following: Polio, Tetanus, Typhoid, & Hepatitis ‘A'. Malaria prophylaxis is recommended for this trip. Yellow Fever vaccination is not required unless arriving from an endemic area. A very good online resource is the NHS travel website at fitfortravel.nhs.uk
