Jebel Sahro Winter Sunshine Trek
Morocco, Trek & Walk, 15 days - from £795 (land only) - from €995 (land only) - from $1,390 (land only)
Day 1: Rendezvous at the group hotel in Marrakech. Complimentary airport transfers are provided for clients arriving on this day. Depending on your arrival time you may have time to explore the bustling centre of Marrakech and its colourful souk. KE Land Only package begins with the evening meal.
Day 2: After an early breakfast we drive across the High Atlas to the spectacular Tizi n'Tichka (2260m) - the highest road pass in Morocco! After leaving the "Beau Geste" town of Ouarzazate we drive through the Draa Valley with its stunning rock formations to the village of N'Kob on the fringes of the Sahara where we overnight in a local 'Kasbah.'
Day 3: Our trekking starts with an easy first day as we hike towards the foothills of the Jebel Sahro. Following a stream upwards we'll pass through traditional villages of the Hanedour Valley. We set up camp and prepare for our first night under canvas just 30 minutes outside Tiguiza (1210m), where carefully irrigated patches of land grow carrots, tomatoes and chillies. Walk distance approx; 6hrs.
Day 4: Today we trek out of the valley and through a landscape similar to the Southwest USA with unusual rock formations and monoliths. Our base for the optional ascent of Jebel Amlal (2450m) and the location of our camp for the night is the village of Tagra situated in a beautiful gorge at 1400m. Walk distance approx; 5hrs.
Day 5: A reasonably tough day with a challenging 1000m climb including some scree to the top of Jebel Amlal (2450m). However, the view makes up for the steep ascent offering snow-capped views of the Atlas to the North and West and the Sahara to the South. Our nearest big Atlas peak is Mount Mgoun and after taking 'summit photos' we return to camp, a welcome end to a long day. Walk distance approx; 9-10
Day 6: Our longest trekking day offers some of Morocco's best walking as we head up to the high plateau of Tadaout 'n Tablah used by the semi-nomadic Ait Atta Berber to graze animals. Surrounded by stunning rock formations including spires and pillars, our highlight is Bab n'Ali (Ali's Gate), a pair of 60m monoliths. Tonight we'll experience a riverside camp Akebash (1400m). Walk distance approx; 8-9hrs.
Day 7: A welcoming day of easy walking following two days of challenging trekking taking us from a desert-like environment to a mountainous area of craggy peaks. We follow relatively flat walking trails through villages scattered with date palms before reaching a plateau just beyond Taoulauat and our camp for the night at 1400m. Walk distance approx; 5hrs.
Day 8: The morning sees us heading towards the Bou Gafer group of summits. After a fairly short trek we reach our camp at Tadawt Tazgart (1900m) where we enjoy a leisurely lunch. The afternoon can either be spent hiking up to one of the surrounding ridges or relaxing and taking in the views. Walk distance approx; 3-4hrs.
Day 9: Feeling refreshed after yesterday's relaxed day we start by climbing up to 2050m including a couple of high ridges as we near the Bou Gaffer group of peaks. After lunch we'll ascend further and explore an old French Fortress before steeply descending to an open valley and our camp at 1700m. Walk distance approx; 7hrs.
Day 10: Today we're in some of the Bou Gafer's most striking scenery and as we head up to the main peak at 1978m we'll explore an area not only beautiful but rich in history. The summit also rewards us with great views of Amalou n'Mansour. The afternoon sees us heading into the Oulili Valley where at the end of our trekking day we set up camp at 1830m just beyond Oulili Village. Walk distance approx; 7h
Day 11: A short day preparing us for tomorrow's optional summit attempt on Amalou n'Mansour (2712m). Climbing out of the open Oulili Valley we contour west trekking through an open valley before establishing camp at 2050m near the hamlet of Tanemlalt. The afternoon is free for exploring the surrounding peaks or relaxing. Walk distance approx; 3hrs
Day 12: An excellent optional summit finale and the biggest peak in the Jebel Saharo Massif. The summit of Amalou n'Mansour at 2712m offers a stunning panorama including an overview of our route and is a memorable end to the trek. We'll descend from the peak down to road head, say farewell to the trek staff and drive to Kasbah Tizzarouine with its welcoming pool where we'll overnight. Walk distance 6-8hrs
Day 13: An early start is needed for our drive back to Marrakech across the Atlas and through the Dades Valley, 'the valley of one thousand kasbahs', which offers plenty of photo opportunities along the way! After a late afternoon check-in there'll be time to experience the magical Djemaa-el-Fna coming to life after dark. Later we'll rendezvous for an evening of Moroccan cuisine in a local restaurant
Day 14: A leisurely breakfast is followed by a morning's sightseeing with an English speaking guide focused around the Djemaa-el-Fna and central Marrakech. The rest of the day is free to explore at leisure with the souk being a great place to escape the afternoon heat whilst browsing through colourful pottery and leather goods. In the evening we'll enjoy a final group meal rounding off a wonderful trek.
Day 15: KE Land Only package services end after breakfast. Complimentary airport transfers are provided for clients departing this day.
