From the cosmopolitan capital of Amman to the Red Sea resort of Aqaba, Jordan has a great deal to offer the intrepid traveller and this week-long holiday manages to include most of the highlights. After visits to the well-preserved Roman city of Jerash and to the town of Madaba, with its 6th century mosaic map of the Holy Land, we head south, stopping off to swim in the Dead Sea and to look around the magnificent Crusader fortress of Kerak. We then allow 2 days for a proper exploration of Petra, the Middle East's iconic 'lost city', making our initial entrance in dramatic fashion from the highest part of the site at the 'Monastery'. Two nights at a Bedouin camp in Wadi Rum give us plenty of time to enjoy the fantastic desert landscapes of Lawrence of Arabia's old stamping ground, before we round off our time in Jordan with 2 nights at the crystal blue waters of the Red Sea. Famed for its rich, colourful marine life and relaxed atmosphere, staying in our comfortable coastal resort and warm Jordanian hospitality, is the perfect way to relax and recharge at the end of intrepid discovery of Jordan.
Is this holiday for you?
This is a sightseeing tour of the best of Jordan. The transfers between the sites are generally between 1-2 hrs, with the exception of the drive from Aqaba to Amman airport on the last day which is approximately 4 hours. The areas and sights that we visit will involve walking for at least part but occasionally all of the day, and suitable shoes should be worn for this. The longest walk is when we enter Petra through the backtrails on day 4. Although the trek on this day is around 3 hours when the sightseeing around Petra is included, you will be on your feet for around 6 hours on this day. At the time of year that we will be visiting Jordan it will not be extremely hot but we may encounter day-time temperatures as high as 30°C.
