La Gomera - Jewel of the Canaries
Canary Islands & Spain, Trek & Walk, 8 days - from £895 (land only) - from €1,120 (land only) - from $1,565 (land only)
Day 1: Arriving on the island of Tenerife, KE Land Only package services begin with a group transfer by ferry to La Gomera. From the harbour in San Sebastian it's only 10 minutes walk to our hotel while our luggage is transferred separately. We have a briefing from our guide and some free time to explore the town before dinner.
Day 2: After a short transfer, we walk up toward Garajonay National Park, the green heart of La Gomera. Here we enter the rain forest-like atmosphere of the dense laurel wood which covers most of the northern part of the island. We climb up to a splendid viewpoint over the entire island and across the sea to El Teide on Tenerife. We descend to our accommodation in Chipude.
Day 3: We traverse two lovely valleys and pass the pottery-making village of El Cercado to reach Valle Gran Rey, the prettiest valley on the island with its terraced fields and palm groves. Along the way, we stop for lunch at a traditional restaurant, before descending among palms, junipers, heather and laurel trees, into the Valley of Los Loros and our hotel in Vallehermoso.
Day 4: We start today with a long gradual ascent to the chapel of Santa Clara, built high on a ridge. From here, we enjoy breath-taking views - 700 metres straight down and out over the mountaintops to the sea. Then, following a well-maintained path, we walk down to a tiny cove along the coast and return on foot to the village of Vallehermoso.
Day 5: We have a steep ascent to the distinctive Roque El Cano, before continuing more easily to Las Rosas and the National Park Visitors' Centre. We drop into the Barranco Sobre Argoto and climb again to El Chorillo for sensational views down into Hermigua Valley. We traverse high above the valley for a while then descend directly to Hermigua and our hotel..
Day 6: We have a choice of routes today. A short option takes us through terraced farms, then a bizarre landscape of intriguing vegetation on our way to La Caleta bay. The longer route takes us high above the coast with fabulous views of Tenerife, El Teide Peak and the sea. Both walks end up back at the hotel in Hemigua.
Day 7: We start with a climb to the viewpoint of 'Degollada de Peraza', then from there walk through a stunning landscape on the southeast coast on well-maintained and way-marked paths. The final section takes us past a beach, where we can stop for a swim, a pleasant way to end our week on Gomera. Arriving in San Sebastian we check into our hotel and enjoy a farewell dinner.
Day 8: After breakfast we take a ferry back to Tenerife and transfer to the airport where KE Land Only package services end.
