Tanzania Trek to the Summits of Mount Meru and KilimanjaroClimb Kilimanjaro and Meru in Tanzania

  • A simply stunning combination of trekking to Meru and Kilimanjaro
  • Acclimatisation trek on Mount Meru
  • Game drive in the Arusha National Park
  • Trekking across the quiet Shira plateau route on Kilimanjaro
  • The best combination for a Tanzania mountain trekking holiday

On this double peak holiday we acclimatisewith a trek to the summit of Mount Meru before moving on to climb Africa's highest mountain, Kilimanjaro. As well as being a worthy objective in its own right, the ascent of Mount Meru prior to tackling Kilimanjaro means that you will be well acclimatised and this will ensure that your experience in Tanzania is remembered as a holiday rather than a feat of endurance. Flying in to Kilimanjaro Airport in Tanzania, gives us speedy access to the comfortable Momella Lodge, which lies beneath the striking rocky summit of Mount Meru (4566m). Our ascent of this dormant volcano involves a wonderful 4-day trek, leading through pleasant game-filled parkland and then bamboo forest and moorland, to the dramatic crater rim. Here, we can look across with a sense of anticipation to snow-capped Kilimanjaro, 70 kilometres away to the east. Before transferring to Kilimanjaro, we enjoy a game drive in the Arusha National Park, an outstandingly beautiful nature reserve where we can expect to see elephant, buffalo, giraffe, antelope and numerous bird species. Having acclimatised on Meru, we will be in good shape to enjoy the ascent of Kilimanjaro, following the picturesque and relatively little-used Shira Route. Above the Baranco Hut, we join the Machame route and ascend directly to the 'Roof of Africa'.

We offer a variety of options for climbing Kilimanjaro including an 8 day ascent of Kilimanjaro via the Rongai Route and a 15 day holiday which includes ascents of both Mount Kenya and Kilimanjaro. It is also possible to comine an ascent of Kilimanjaro with a 3-day big game safari or with some added time trelaxing on a beach in the exotic spice islands of Zanzibar.

Kilimanjaro Porter Assistance Project
We also make every effort to look after our local crews, who are, of course, fundamental to the success of our Kilimanjaro holidays. KE works with the Kilimanjaro Porter Assistance Project and, in recognition of the quality of care we provide for our local staff, we are listed as a partner on the International Mountain Explorers Connection website.

Is this holiday for you?

Kilimanjaro is a very big mountain and any ascent will present a considerable challenge. The ascent of Mount Meru prior to climbing Kilimanjaro will greatly help with acclimatisation, generally increasing your chances of a successful ascent. However this also adds around 2500 metres to the total ascent which has to be made in the course of the holiday. We have included a rest day and further acclimatisation during the ascent of Kilimanjaro on the Shira Plateau at 3800 metres. Generally, there are excellent trails to follow, although on the upper parts (summit days) of Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro we will have to negotiate sections of loose scree and some snow and ice on the mountain's crater rim.
