Day 1: After meeting at Dubrovnik Airport, we cross from Croatia into Montenegro before a spectacular drive (2hrs) takes us up into the hills and onto Ostrog Monastery. This amazing pilgrimidge site was built partly using natural caves into the cliff face. Our first night's accommodation is simple but atmospheric as we stay in the monastery's guest house.
Day 2: A relaxing but fascinating start to the week as we begin by visiting the the famous Ostrog Monastery to see its wonderful cave churches and frescoes. After lunch we transfer to the alpine town of Zabljak (1450m) in UNESCO Durmitor National Park (approx 3hrs) where we can admire the views after checking into the hotel.
Day 3: Today we walk direct from Zabljak on the Durmitor Plateau Lakes Walk. Our route to the Black Lake takes us through pristine pine forest before continuing uphill and on to the plateau, where we enjoy a picnic lunch near Serpent Lake. In the afternoon we return to Zabljak via the scenic third lake, Barno. We overnight in our hotel in Zabljak. Approx walk distance: 5hr, 100m ascent & descent.
Day 4: The hiking today takes us on the spectacular Bear Summit Circuit, as we set off this morning and follow the shore of the Black Lake before heading towards the mountains. We leave pine forests behind as the terrain becomes more adventurous with alpine peaks and snow patchs. After the Previja pass (2,145m) we descend back to Zabljak via the Black Lake and Lokvice. Walk distance approx: 6hrs
Day 5: This morning we cross over the Djurdjevica Tara Bridge which spans the River Tara, creating the deepest river gorge in Europe. We visit the 13th century Moraca Monastery decorated in spectacular frescoes before walking through the spectacular Mrtvica Canyon to find the `Gates of Wishes.` In the afternoon we transfer to the stunningly beautiful Kotor Fjord and check into our hotel by the sea.
Day 6: This morning we start with a city tour around Kotor which includes a 2hr walk on the city ramparts and ancient walls. From Ivan's Tower we have magnificent views over the town and a panorama of the fjord. After lunch the afternoon is free to enjoy this pretty town, maybe with an optional boat ride along Kotor Fjord or just relaxing in the town and watching the world go by.
Day 7: We walk today from Kotor as we head for the Mountain of Vrmac, famous for its ridge which offers one of the best panoramic views of the fjords and coastal villages. After a picnic lunch and admiring the view, we descend to Markov beach between Stoliv and Prcanj where we relax and have a welcoming swim. We return to our hotel in Prcanj for our final night in Montenegro. Walk distance approx: 5hrs
Day 8: After breakfast KE Land Only package end with a group transfer to Dubrovnik airport. This transfer will take 2 -3hrs depending on border formalities.
This holiday involves going to moderately high altitude. During the course of your trip you will reach altitudes in excess of 2500 metres. Most people will have no difficulty with this level of altitude but before coming on the holiday, we recommend you read the advice on trekking at altitude.
