Mexico's Silver Trail Trek
Holiday Itinerary
Day 1: Rendezvous at the group hotel in Chihuahua City. A single, timed group transfer is provided from airport to hotel. KE Land Only package services begin with the overnight in the group hotel.
Day 2: We transfer by road to Carachic, where we check in to a lodge. We hike to the historic Batopilas Mining Company station near town, sort our gear for the trek and enjoy a fajita cookout for dinner.
Day 3: We drive to the trailhead at El Ojito, where we load the burros and begin hiking to Herradura. There is good swimming and interesting caves near to our camp.
Day 4: Trek to our camp at Huajochi Station - one of the original stations on the Silver Trail - located on the Rio Conchos. There is the opportunity visit Tarahumara farmers en route.
Day 5: Hike to Richochi and Kino Springs, a scenic mesa top campsite with a small spring for water.
Day 6: Trek via the Valley of the Churches and up the Rio Aguascalientes to our camp beside the hot springs. Interesting Tarahumara farms and inhabited riverside caves, en route.
Day 7: Trek up to the Pilares Road where we meet our vehicle. Shuttle to the Tarahumara settlement of Norogachic and then on to the old way-station at La Laja for a night of car camping.
Day 8: Shuttle to rejoin the trail, where we meet a new team of burros and trek to the bottom of Samachique Canyon. Interesting large caves and old growth forest around the campsite.
Day 9: Trek to a camp at the historic station at Teboreachic, climbing out of the canyon and then down into another.
Day 10: Trek along the mesa tops to near the village of Coyachique, set high on the upper slopes overlooking Batopilas Canyon. Magnificent views down into the canyons during today's walk.
Day 11: Trek down into Batopilas Canyon and the end of the Silver Trail at Batopilas, a former centre of colonial mining operations. We enjoy its sub-tropical climate and hotel accommodation!
Day 12: A leisurely day in Batopilas with a visit to the ruined Hacienda San Miguel, a chance to look into the abandoned Silver Mine tunnels, stroll the streets and relax in the plaza. Hotel.
Day 13: Morning departure for Chihuahua. We'll arrive in the afternoon and, after checking in at our hotel, should have time for a stroll around the main plaza before dinner.
Day 14: KE Land Only package services end after breakfast. A single timed airport transfer will be arranged for clients departing on the preferred group flight.
