Nicaragua is not only the largest country is Central America, it is also one of the hottest upcoming trekking destinations; running parallel to its Pacific coast are a rocky spine of volcanoes, which provide our objectives for this superb Central American trekking holiday. Through a series of guided day hikes we will summit six of Nicaragua's volcanoes, including the black ash mountain of Cerro Negro, the perfectly conical Momotombo, the challenging Telica and, of course, San Cristobal - the highest of them all! Adding to the excitement, many of the volcanoes on the agenda are still active and we are sure to see some volcanic action during the course of the holiday. As well as smoking fissures, boiling mud, lava pools and crater lakes perfect for swimming, we've also time to take a boat tour of Lake Nicaragua, the largest lake in Central America, and discover some of Nicaragua's colonial history with time to explore the beautiful old cities of Grenada and Leon. This vibrant walking holiday is brought to a suitably relaxing conclusion with 2 nights well deserved R&R at a Pacific coastal resort.

Is this holiday for you?
The grading of this holiday is not straightforward as the length and difficulty of each of the peaks varies quite considerably. The trip's grade takes into account a number of factors, including the overall length of the holiday, the ease with which it is possible to opt out of various sections of the itinerary, and the sightseeing and relaxation days on Lake Nicaragua at the beginning of the holiday and at the coast and in Leon at the end. Please note however that some of the ground covered is more typical of terrain encountered on our more demanding trips. The approaches to the volcanoes are generally easy, following established trails through forest or grassland. However, the ascents of some of the volcanoes, notably Telica and San Cristobal, present quite challenging hikes even to regular hillwalkers, sometimes on steep and/or loose ground. We use a support crew during those days when we are camping and personal baggage is transferred between camps. This holiday is suitable for regular hillwalkers and those with a good level of fitness.
