Alpine Peaks of Greenland
Greenland, Polar, 9 days - from £3,095 (land only) - from €3,715 (land only) - from $5,095 (land only)
Day 1: From Copenhagen we fly via Kangerlussuaq to Maniitsoq. This picturesque town is nestled on an island in the fjord surrounded by 2000m peaks. In this community fishing and hunting form the backbone of the economy. If we have time we will visit the museum portraying the regional history and culture. Sperm Whales are frequently seen in the fjord. We board the Rembrandt Van Rijin.
Day 2: Sailing north we reach the awe-inspiring Sermilinguaq Fjord. This area offers the most rugged scenery and peaks are by impressive glaciers. The snowshoe hikers will explore the lower slopes and viewpoints. We continue sailing North.
Day 3: Snaking through the inlets we sail around Hamborgerland and further north to Kangerdluarssuat fjord. We have snowshoeing options along the waters edge and up to the glaciers. The ski mountaineers scale higher peaks and pick a downhill run. Once skiers and snowshoe walkers reassemble back on the ship we will sail through this beautiful alpine scenery and enjoy evening in relaxed atmosphere onboard.
Day 4: The northern slopes of the mountains surrounding the Kangerluarsuat fjord are superb, and we have time to explore these on snowshoes or skis. With sunshine sparkling off the snow crystals and the rugged peaks surrounding us we are sure to be charmed by Greenland's spell. This remote and rarely visited area has a freshness and beauty rarely found elsewhere.
Day 5: We sail onwards, hopefully spotting some breaching whales in the waters to the Evighedsfjorden (Eternity Fjord). Here in the calm waters we experience more breathtaking scenery. The glacier of Taateraat Sermiat falls right into the sea forming small icebergs. We snowshoe in this area and the skiers will climb one of the 1000m peaks. The views across Eternity Fjord from the summits is magnificent.
Day 6: Another day in this area gives us the best opportunity to seek out the optimum snow conditions for our activities. With some luck we'll see Caribou delicately crossing the tundra for their summer feeding grounds. At this time of year it is likely that we will see the spectacular Northern Lights whilst we are onboard the boat in the evenings.
Day 7: Our return journey takes us to some of the smaller, but not less beautiful fjords. We anchor up where the snow slopes and walks look good for us. Another peaceful day amongst the back drop of jagged peaks and sparkling snow, and waters with whales making their way to their breeding grounds. Back on board we have another hearty meals in the cosy restaurant area before we retire to our cabins.
Day 8: The northern cost of the island of Hamborgerland we explore the glaciated interior of this wilderness on the snowshoes or the skis. After our last day in the snow and peaks of this utterly remote and stunning wilderness, we sail towards Maniitsoq, maybe again experiencing the Aurora Borealis.
Day 9: We disembark in Maniitsoq. We board the charter plane from Maniitsoq to Kangerdlussuaq, and onward scheduled flight to Copenhagen. KE package land only services end in Copenhagen.
Please note that PAP.1 and PAP.2 are 9 days and PAP.3 and PAP.4 are 8 days Land Only.
