This is Polar cruising in the Arctic for those that want to do more than just sit and watch! The comfortable MV Plancius or MV Ortelius will be our base camp during the voyage around Spitzbergen and Svalbard. We will have several different base camp locations in the various fjords and inlets during the voyage, from where we can head out in the zodiacs to get close to the wildlife or make shore landings to enjoy multi-activities which go beyond the normal polar cruise shore programmes. We can take the kayaks out and get off the beaten track with our expert guides, or enjoy some time on shore hiking or snowshoeing. Group members can also opt for a photo-work shop or a shore excursions to visit historical sites of Arctic exploration and the whaling industry. All these activities are led by qulified instructors and are included in the price of the holiday. Previous experience of any of these activities is not required. For the really intrepid there is also the option at additional cost to go scuba diving in Spitsbergen (previous experience is required for this activity). During our activities we intend to get as close as we can to the wildlife - a totally exhilarating experience. This is the Polar cruise holiday for wildlife lovers and outdoorsy people.
Explore International. This is one of our Explore International holidays. Participants on these holidays can book through KE or through one of our international partners. This helps us to gather together sufficient numbers of like-minded adventurers to get your holiday up and running quickly. Led by an English-speaking guide, the cosmopolitan nature of these groups can be an important part of the experience!
Is this holiday for you?
All activities from the ship are optional, and you can choose just to participate in the zodiac excursions. However if you are interested in the activities then you should have a reasonable level of fitness to participate. No previous experience is required (except for Scuba Diving). On each landing there will be a range of hiking and snowshoeing options from easy to moderately challenging lasting 2 - 4 hours. If participating in the zodiac excursions you must be able to get up and down the steep gangway from the ship to the water level to board the Zodiacs. Staff will assist you in and out of the boats. Ashore it can be slippery and rocky. Also consider that you are travelling in remote areas without quick access to sophisticated medical facilities.
