Pyrenees Snowshoe High Level

Starting out with 2 days of introductory snowshoe hiking from our base just outside Luchon, we then drive up to the head of the Benasque Valley on the Spanish side of the range. Here, from the Nordic ski centre of Llanos del Hospital, we begin a 3-day expedition that will take us into one of the most impressive snow-filled cirques in the Pyrenees. With 2 nights at the Refugio La Renclusa (2140m), we are in a great position to extend our exploration to the 3000 metre summits of Diente de Alba and Mulleres, where we have fantastic views of the nearby Pico Aneto (3404m), the highest Pyrenean peak. This part of the holiday will include a couple of long and testing days, each with around 1000 metres of ascent. Returning to Luchon and the comfort and fine food of our rustic lodge, a free day allows us the opportunity to take it easy or to try another optional winter activity - such as skiing at nearby Superbagneres.

This snowshoeing holiday begins with an introductory session on relatively easy snow covered forest trails before heading to the high mountains. During the week we will make ascents of several 3000 metre peaks. No previous snowshoeing experience is required but previous winter walking experience and a good level of fitness are essential. You will need to carry your overnight belongings for 2 nights up and down from the refugio. 2 nights are spent at the refugio and 5 nights at a comfortable lodge/chalet. The itinerary will be flexible and during the week the guide will use his/her expertise and local knowledge to determine the best routes to take advantage of prevailing snow conditions and the abilities of the group.
