Transylvania Traverse - Trekking in Romania

Day 1: Rendezvous at the airport where KE Land Only package services begin. We take a panoramic tour of Bucharest and visit the Muzuel Satului (Romanian Village Museum) before transferring to Sinaia where we spend the night in a hotel.
Day 2: Morning visit to the Peles Palace. We then take a cable car and hike to the top of Mount Omu, the high point of the Bucegi Plateau. Overnight in a mountain lodge located at 2500m with views across to the Faragas and Piatra Crailui mountains. Walk distance 9km, 567m of ascent, 217m of descent. Approx 3 to 4 hours walking.
Day 3: A long and exciting descent down to Bran and 'Castle Dracula', perched dramatically on a rocky outcrop. There is the option to visit the castle for those who wish. Alternatively we have some time to explore the medieval city of Brasov. Walk distance 10.5km, 89m of ascent, 1669m of descent. Approx 7 hours walking.
Day 4: Today we explore the Fagaras, the highest of the Romanian Carpathians. We drive up the Transfagarasan Road to reach a pass from where we begin our traverse. From Balea Lake we follow the ridge to a col below Varful Mircii (2467m) and then descend to the Podragu Mountain Hut (2136m). Walk distance 8km, 986m of ascent, 823m of descent. Approx 7 to 8 hours walking.
Day 5: The ascent of Molodoveanu, highest point in Romania. Following the main Fagaras ridge to Varful Tarata we enjoy extensive views before the steep climb to the summit of Moldoveanu (2544m). Descend to the Sambata Valley and overnight accommodation at the Sambata hut. Total walk distance 16km, 1046m of ascent, 1835m of descent. Approx 10+ hours walking.
Day 6: Descend to Sambata Monastery and transfer to Zarnesti. A horse and cart takes us into the spectacular Piatra Craiului national park where we enjoy a barbecue and Romanian sing song. Walk distance 6.5km, 559m of descent. Approx 3 hours walking.
Day 7: Our final day's hiking is spent in the Piatra Craiului National Park. The guide will choose an appropriate route from anywhere between 3 and 9 hours walking . Afterwards we return to Zarnesti for our final night in Romania.
Day 8: An early start for the return transfer to Bucharest. KE Land Only package services end after breakfast with a single timed group transfer to Bucharest Otopeni Airport.
This holiday involves going to moderately high altitude. During the course of your trip you will reach altitudes in excess of 2500 metres. Most people will have no difficulty with this level of altitude but before coming on the holiday, we recommend you read the advice on trekking at altitude.
