Hidden away from tourism for the duration of the Communist regime, Transylvania is an unexplored land of delights. Magical Transylvania has it's own distinct identity defined by the people, the culture and the Carpathian Mountains which arc majestically through the region. Known as the legendary home of Count Dracula, Transylvania is not only a land of myth and stories, but also a land of virgin forests, beautiful mountain ranges, breathtaking scenery and welcoming people. This holiday includes relaxed walks in the Carpathian Mountains, including the Bucegi, Fagaras and Piatra Craiului massifs alongside the cultural highlghts of the area. We start with a visit to the fairy-tale Peles Palace and take a day-hike on the Bucegi Plateau, where we are rewarded by awe-inspiring views before transferring to the ancient Saxon village of Viscri. Here we enjoy a stay for 2 nights in homestay accommodation in the heart of this remote village, a favourite place of Prince Charles. Our simple accommodation is charming, with rooms furnished in old-fashioned Saxon style and staying with families means we can sample the local specialties whilst fully experiencing the local culture. Driving up into the Fagaras mountains on the jaw-dropping Transfagaraian Road, voted by Top Gear as the best drive in the world, we hike up to a high pass with ridge-top views. In the Piatra Craiului National Park we walk through virgin forests before enjoying a traditional BBQ dinner with our local hosts. Next is Bran Castle, the legendary home of Count Dracula, and we arrive in style by local horse and cart! After an overnight in the atmospheric medieval town of Brasov, with its distinctive Baroque architecture, we end our holiday in the capital of Bucharest by taking a tour of the city's sights including the Palace of the Parliament, former home of Nicolae Ceauscescu, before enjoying a final celebratory dinner!
Is this holiday for you?
The walking on this holiday in Romania is not difficult or sustained. There are walks on 5 days of the holiday, with the walk time varying from 2 to 5 hours. The pace will be relatively relaxed and gentle, with only moderate amounts of ascent and descent. We will be walking on a variety of trails from rough country roads to shepherd's paths in the mountains. The paths are good with no difficult sections and no degree of exposure. While there is sufficient walking on each day to satisfy regular hikers, it is intended that this should be a discovery holiday with a gentle pace that allows everyone to experience and learn more about the culture of Transylvania. Please note that some of the walks can be optional for those who wish to take it easy. Accommodation throughout will be at hotels, other than the 2 nights at homestay accommodation in Viscri. This accommodation is more akin to a simple guesthouse than "homestay". Rooms are twin-shared and some rooms are en-suite. The rooms are all traditionally and comfortably furnished and all meals are home-cooked and delicious. Whilst without hotel facilities, the welcome here will be warm.
