Peru, Trek & Walk, 10 days - from £2,895 (land only) - from €4,055 (land only) - from $4,640 (land only)
Day 1: Arriving in Cusco, KE Land Only package services begin with a transfer to our centrally located and very comfortable hotel. The rest of the day is free to relax and acclimatise. Overnight at the group hotel.
Day 2: An acclimatization day in Cusco. During the morning we make a walking tour of the city and visit the impressive fortress of Sacsayhuaman. Afternoon free. We spend a second night at our hotel.
Day 3: After an early breakfast, there is a 7am pick up for the drive via the Inca ruins at Tarawasi and onwards through Mollepata to the start of our trek. We hike for around 5 hours on the 'Camino Real' to Soraypampa and the first luxury lodge, known as Salkantay.
Day 4: A free day to explore the area and to aid our acclimatisation. A 3 to 4 hour hike to a glacial lake is an option. We spend a second night at the Salkantay Lodge, with its outside jacuzzi.
Day 5: Today, we hike up the Rio Blanco Valley and make a loop around the peak of Humantay, with our high point at the pass known as the Abra Salkantay (4638m). We enjoy great views of the Vilcabamba, before descending to overnight at Wayra ('Wind') Lodge which we reach after approximately 7 hours walking.
Day 6: We spend the morning at Wayra Lodge, then hike down to the Salkantay River through increasingly forested terrain. This is an easy day involving little more than 3 hours walking. Overnight at Colpa Lodge.
Day 7: Today's walk takes us through the pleasantly rural Santa Teresa Valley, with its banana and avocado and coffee plantations. We have a picnic lunch beside the river, before a short transfer to the start of the Llactapata Inca Trail and a short trek to Lucma Lodge. A total of 5 hours walking.
Day 8: We ascend to the Llactapata Pass (2736m) for views of Machu Picchu from the south-west. Then, descend to Hydroelectrica after around 5 hours walking. From here, we have a half-hour train ride to Aguas Calientes and our comfortable hotel.
Day 9: An early start, for the bus ride up to Machu Picchu. We have a full guided tour, as well as free time to look around the site independently. In the afternoon, we return to Cusco by train and private bus. Overnight in the group hotel.
Day 10: KE Land Only group package services end after breakfast. Complimentary airport transfers are provided.
This holiday involves going to high altitude. During the course of your trip you will reach altitudes in excess of 3500 metres. This is not something that you should worry about; the human body is quite capable of adapting to a very wide range of altitudes, but it is important that we follow some simple rules in order to acclimatise successfully. Before coming on this holiday you should read the advice on trekking at high altitude.
