School Adventure - White Mountains of Crete
Holiday Itinerary
Day 1: Arriving at Chania Airport in the afternoon we meet our KE representative and transfer to Sougia. Hotel.
Day 2: An easy first day of walking, including the chance to explore the Roman ruins at Lissos, with 1st Century mosaic. Overnight at Sougia.
Day 3: Drive to the top of the Samaria Gorge and from here make the hike to the summit of rocky Gingilos (1980m/6495ft.) which overlooks the gorge. Overnight in Omalos. Hotel.
Day 4: Again, we transfer to the top of the Samaria Gorge and set off on the descent to the sea. Initially steep, with many steps, the trail soon levels out. Overnight at Agia Roumeli. Hotel.
Day 5: Today is free at Agia Roumeli. At leisure on the beach or there are options for scenic walks, long and short, to a number of ancient forts above this coastal hamlet.
Day 6: A pleasant walk on a coastal path which skirts the beach. Beyond the old chapel of Saint Paul, we cross a rocky section to reach the beach of Marmara at the mouth of the Aradena Gorge. Overnight at the tiny port of Loutro.
Day 7: After a ferry ride and a 25 kilometre transfer on forest roads, we hike to the top of Pachnes, the highest summit of the White Mountains. A long day out, returning to Loutro.
Day 8: We have a short final, coastal walk to Hora Sfakion, followed by an interesting transfer across the central ranges to Crete's north coast and on to Chania. Depart from Chania Airport in the afternoon.
