Tortuguero National Park

Located in the North East of Costa Rica on the Caribbean coast, Tortuguero is a fabulous National Park with incredible biodiversity. It has 11 different habitats from rainforest and beaches to lagoons and swamps. The beaches are the key nesting grounds for several endangered sea turtles, including the Loggerheads, Hawksbill, Green and Leatherbacks. The park is also home to jaguars, three-toed sloths and 4 species of monkey including the Spider, Howler, White-headed Capuchin. There are also hundreds of birds like the colourful kingfishers, toucans and parrots as well as thousands of different species of flora. Please note that Tortuguero is not a beach resort and swimming in the sea is not recommend because of strong currents and large waves.
Tortuguero National Park
This lodge is located between the Tortuguero canals and the Caribbean Sea. It is a great location and within walking distance of Tortuguero town. It has 54 rooms with private facilities, ceiling fans and views of the gardens. At the lodge there is also a butterfly garden, as well as an iguana and frog gardens, swimming pool and a volleyball sand court. 2 canal boat tours are included in different canals, as well as a tour of the village to see the local houses, museum and beaches. Optional tours (payable locally) can be done at the lodge including a night walk, fishing and a night turtle tour.

What's Not Included

Leaving San Jose early in the morning we transfer eastwards. We stop in Guapiles for some breakfasts before continuing to Cano Blanco (3hrs) where we take the boat to the lodge (1hr 30mins). We arrive at around lunchtime. In the afternoon we have a guided tour of the village learning the way of life for the locals, we return to the lodge on the beach trail. (B,L, D)
This morning we have an optional canal tour (approx 2hrs) to see wildlife including several colourful birds, crocodiles and possibly turtles. This is the best time of the day to see the wildlife. After breakfast we can visit the butterfly farm and frog gardens. After lunch we have a second canal tour on a different canal. Dinner is at the pool restaurant. There is an optional night walk. After breakfast we transfer back to San Jose the way we came, firstly by boat and then by minibus back to the San Jose hotel. Arrive San Jose approximately 4pm. Overnight San Jose. (B,L)
Transfer to the airport for our flight home. (B)
