South GeorgiaSouth Georgia

  • In the footsteps of Ernest Shackleton
  • Snow-capped peaks and emerald green bays
  • Fantastic Southern Ocean wildlife
  • Option to make the `Shackleton Crossing` on skis
  • Cruise around the spectacular Island of South Georgia

This unique expeditionary cruise promises an exciting crossing of the Southern Ocean and an exploration of the bays and islands of the remote and beautiful UK Overseas Territory of South Georgia. During this special Polar Cruise there will be visits ashore by zodiac boat, with the chance to get close to elephant seals, king penguins and wandering albatrosses at their nesting site. There are various options for hikes and visits to abandoned whaling stations to soak in the history as well as the landscape and wildlife of the remote island of South Georgia in the South Atlantic Ocean. An exciting option on this voyage is to attempt the challenging crossing of South Georgia on skis (see the trip extensions section for details). This 3-day option is limited to 12 participants who must be competant skiers and pre-booking is essential. The ski expedition will be professionally guided on a 40km route across South Georgia following in the footsteps of Shackleton from King Haakon Bay to a rendezvous with our polar cruise ship, the M/V Plancius, at the former whaling station in Stromness. Whether you take your skis, or you're just along for the cruise - adventure is guaranteed!

Is this holiday for you?

This is principally a touring, sightseeing and wildlife viewing holiday, with minimal exertion required - it is graded easy. If you choose to go ashore, you will need to make the transfers from the ship to a Zodiac and onto land. You should also consider that some of the classes of accommodation involve the use of bunk-beds. Whilst on deck or during excursions, you need to be prepared for cold temperatures. The itinerary remains flexible, according to the variability of the weather and sea conditions at these southerly latitudes. Longer walks of 2 - 3 hours on South Georgia are optional and weather dependent. Those opting to make the ski crossing of South Georgia need to be in good physical condition and must be competant skiers and ski mountaineers on a variety of terrain. The days of the ski crossing will be long and the weather can be very cold and windy. Note that the ski crossing extension is graded as STRENUOUS.
