School Trek - Three Peaks Challenge
Iceland, School Expeditions, 8 days - from £1,645 (land only) - from €2,305 (land only) - from $2,660 (land only)
Day 1: Arriving at Keflavik Airport, we meet the KE representative and transfer to the group's guesthouse accommodation in the Icelandic capital of Reykjavik.
Day 2: We drive north to the foot of Mount Botnssulur and hike up to 2 of its northern summits (1083m), with views of Lake Thingvellir and the distant Vestmann Islands. Today, we also visit the Geysir geothermal area and the waterfall of Gullfoss, as we complete our drive to a mountain lodge beneath Mount Hekla.
Day 3: Today, we have a short transfer to the start of our climb on Hekla (1491m). This involves a long ascent across a lunar landscape to reach a summit which is often fissured and steaming. Dropping down via the route of our ascent, we return to spend a second night at our lodge accommodation.
Day 4: Continuing across the Fjallabak, we reach Landmannalaugar, where a dip in the hot springs is recommended. There is the option to hike up to a splendid little viewpoint summit known as Blahnukur, before we continue our journey via the Eldgja Canyon to our lodge accommodation at Skaftafell.
Day 5: We can expect a long day today (12 to 14 hours) as we make the ascent of Hvannadalshnukur (2119m), Iceland's highest peak. Starting out close to sea-level, the first part of the ascent is across open moorland, then across the Oraefajokull Glacier. There are fantastic summit views given clear weather. We descend to spend a second night at Skaftafell.
Day 6: A touring day, with the chance to walk the easy trails of the Skaftafell National Park, to visit the the seabird colony at Ingolfshofdi and the famous glacier lagoon at Jokulsarlon. We return to spend a third night at Skaftafell.
Day 7: Heading back towards the west along the scenic south coast of Iceland, we pass beneath the now infamous volcano, Eyjafjallajokull, and visit the impressive Skogarfoss waterfall. Overnight at our Reykjavik accommodation.
Day 8: A group transfer to Keflavik Airport is provided, coordinated with the departure of the homeward flight.
