School Adventure - Three Peaks Challenge
Holiday Itinerary
Day 1: Arriving at Keflavik Airport in the afternoon we meet the KE representative and transfer to the group's guesthouse in the Icelandic capital of Reykjavik.
Day 2: We drive north to the foot of Mount Botnsulur and trek to the south summit (1095m/3,593ft) Overnight at the Hrauneyjar Refuge.
Day 3: Today, we climb Hekla (1490m/4,892ft), which involves 1000 metres / 3,281 feet of ascent across a lunar landscape to reach a summit which is fissured and steaming. Return to Hrauneyjar.
Day 4: Continuing by 4WD vehicle, we reach Landmannalaugar, where a dip in the hot springs is recommended. We then drive to Skaftafell, via the Eldgja Canyon and the valley of Skaftartunga.
Day 5: We have a day-hike in the Kristinartindar region, trekking to the highest summit, which provides us with great views of our objective for the following day.
Day 6: We can expect a long day today, as we make the ascent of Hvannadalshnukur (2120m/6,952ft), Iceland's highest peak. Much of the route is on the Oraefajokull Glacier.
Day 7: A touring day, visiting the lowlands of the Skaftafell National Park, including J'kulsarlon, the famous glacier lagoon.
Day 8: Heading back towards the west along the scenic south coast of Iceland, we pass beneath Eyjafjallajokull and visit the impressive Skogarfoss waterfall. Overnight in Reykjavik.
Day 9: Free morning, with the option to visit the Blue Lagoon. In the afternoon we transfer to Keflavik Airport for the return flight home.
