Ethiopian Explorer - Trekking the Simien Mountains

Day 1: Rendezvous at the group hotel in Addis Ababa (2200m). A single timed group transfer is provided. KE Land Only services begin with lunch followed by an afternoon city tour of Ethiopia`s capital city before enjoying our first evening of Ethiopian hospitality.
Day 2: After an early breakfast, we return to the airport for an internal flight to Gondar (2300m) and partake in an afternoon tour that includes a visit to the Royal Enclosure. With it`s unusual medieval castles and numerous churches, which boasts a ceiling of Ethiopian Cherubs, Gondar is a real African Camelot!
Day 3: Heading out to our trailhead, we take a 2-hour drive to the market town of Debark (2700m), where we register before entering the Simien Mountain National Park. We then continue our drive onto Senkaber before making our first camp for the evening (3300m).
Day 4: Beginning our trek we descend via the Michwahtis Valley before making an ascent to see the impressive sight of the Jinbar River plummeting into the Geech Abyss, before continuing upwards and onwards to our campsite at Geech Village (3600m). Walk distance approx; 7-8hrs, 11km, 900m ascent & 550m descent.
Day 5: Leaving our camp at Geech we head for the panorama viewpoint of Imetgogo (3925m) where we are greeted with spectacular views across the jagged escarpment. Continuing our well-paced walk, we return to our campsite and hopefully spot a Gelada Baboon along the way. Walk distance approx; 8hrs, 11km, 500m ascent & 500m descent.
Day 6: Today we follow the edge of the escarpment as we appreciate ever changing views during our hike onto the high point of Inatye (4070m) before we continue on to our panoramic campsite at Chenek. Walk distance approx; 6-7hrs, 13km, 750m ascent & 700m descent.
Day 7: Following a hearty breakfast, we head for the second highest mountain in Ethiopia, trekking up towards Amba Bhawit (4477m) before descending into the Meshawa Valley and climbing up to our camp at the village of Ambiquo (3200m). Walk distance approx; 8hrs, 16km, 1100m ascent & 1600m descent.
Day 8: A glorious dawn start for those that choose to climb to the summit of Ras Deshen (4620m). A challenging but rewarding climb to the cairned summit presents incredible views across the Simien Range before returning to our campsite at Ambiquo. Walk distance approx; 10-11hrs, 23km, 1600m ascent, 1600m descent.
Day 9: Today we head back to the camp at Chenek, retracing our steps through the village of Chiro Leba and over the ridge of Amba Bhawit as we say farewell to our trek crew. Altitude at camp is 4000 metres. Walk distance approx; 8hrs, 16.5km, 1600m ascent & 1000m descent.
Day 10: Leaving the mountains behind we drive approximately 4 hours back to Gondar where there is free time to relax or seek out the hidden castles of this historic city. In the evening, we reconvene for a group meal at our hotel.
Day 11: Taking a morning flight to the ancient city of Lalibela we check into our hotel and start our exploration of rock-hewn churches with Bete Giyorgis, described as the eight wonder of the world.
Day 12: Impossible to appreciate the wonders of Lalibela in a day, we have a second day to explore the cobbled streets, age-old traditions and mysteries of this soulful town.
Day 13: Taking a morning flight we return to Addis Ababa for a free day where we have the use of day-rooms and hotel facilities. KE Land Only services end with the evening meal and a single timed airport transfer is provided.
