Geography

The capital of Jordan is Amman situated in the northwest. Jordan is an almost entirely landlocked country bounded by Syria to the North Iraq to the Northwest, Saudi Arabia to the east and south and Israel to the west. Its has only 26km of coastline bordering the Gulf of Aqaba on the far southwestly tip. Jordan consists of arid forest plateau in the east irrigated by oasis and seasonal water streams, with highland area in the west of arable land and Mediterranean evergreen forestry. The Great Rift Valley of the Jordan River separates Jordan, the west bank and Israel. The highest point in the country is Jabal Umm al Dami, at 1,854 m (6,083 ft) above sea level, while the lowest is the Dead Sea, at 420 m (1,378 ft) below sea level.

Time Zone

The time in Jordan is GMT +2 hours and GMT + 3 hours in summer time

Language

The official language of Jordan is Arabic, which, in its written form has changed little since the 7th century. Using an alphabet very unlike our own, it is one of the most difficult of languages to learn. We do recommend that you take a pocket phrase book and learn some basics such as common greetings. Some Jordanians, especially those in affluent areas and those who work with tourists, will speak English and possibly French.

Climate

The best time to visit Jordan is in the period from late autumn through to early spring, from October through to mid April. Outside of this period it can be very hot, with temperatures rising to 40°C / 104°F! At the time of any of our departures, the maximum daytime temperature is likely to be around 30°C / 86°F, falling as low as 10°C / 50°F at night.

Currency

The unit of currency in Jordan is the Jordanian Dinar. For up to date exchange rates visit: www.xe.com. . You should carry your travel money in the form of currency rather than travellers cheques, since you will exchange the majority of this on the day of your arrival at the airport in Amman. Sterling and US Dollars are equally acceptable in Jordan. It is not necessary to obtain local currency prior to departure.

Visa Requirements

A valid passport (with at least 6 months remaining validity) and a current Jordanian Visa are required. Nationals of certain countries - including all Western European countries, the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Japan - can obtain visas on arrival at the airport in Amman. This visa costs 20 Jordanian Dinars (approximately £20 or the equivalent in US dollars or euros) and must be paid in local currency. There are facilities for changing money at the airport.

Vaccinations

You should attend your own doctor and dentist for a check-up. Your doctor will have access to the most up to date information on the required vaccinations for the country you are visiting. In general we recommend vaccinations against the following: Polio, Tetanus, Typhoid, Hepatitis ‘A’. Yellow Fever is not required unless you are entering Jordan from a yellow-fever-infected country. Malaria prophylaxis is not recommended. A very good online resource is the National Health Travellers website at www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk
