School Trek - Mount Kenya & the Samburu

Day 1: On arrival at Nairobi Airport in the morning we will meet with the KE School Group Leader and our local guide and set off on the 6hr drive north to the Laikipia Plateau. We set up camp in Samburu country with views of Mount Kenya.
Day 2: Today we will meet with our Samburu guides and their camels and begin our trek into the African wilderness. We should encounter plains game and other Samburu people on the way. All equipment and baggage will be transported by our camel caravan. Overnight camping.
Day 3: Today we'll continue our walk to Tomlinson Rocks - granite boulders beside a river. We continue to look for wildlife with our Samburu guides. In the afternoon we'll set up our second camp under the big African sky.l
Day 4: Today we will meet with our vehicles take the 4hr transfer to a community project at a local village school. We have good contacts with many primary schools in the area close to Mt Kenya where targeted project work is great appreciated.
Day 5: A full day at a local school with full and hands-on involvement in project work. Recent students to visit the area have constructed classrooms and decorated and furnished a new library!
Day 6: Our final day of community project work. Perhaps surprisingly, this part of the trip is often the most memorable for the group
Day 7: After saying goodbye to the local people we've spent the last few days working with, we take a short drive to our camp at the base of Mount Kenya. Overnight camp.
Day 8: We use 4WD vehicles to take us part of the way up the track towards the National Park gate. For the final 10 km we walk through the varied landscape to Chogoria Gate (2730m). We overnight in a `banda` (basic mountain lodge accommodation).
Day 9: In the morning we enjoy a game viewing walk in the national park where we can hope to see elephant, buffalo and other local game. After breakfast we begin our trek with the walk to the camp at Lake Ellis (3390m). Later there is the option to take an acclimatisation walk on Mugi Hill. breakfast, trek to our camp at Lake Ellis (3390m). Optional afternoon acclimatisation walk up Mugi Hill (3640m)
Day 10: We continue the ascent, re-joining the main Chogoria Trail. There are spectacular views of Vivienne Falls and the Gorges Valley before arriving at the picturesque campsite at Minto's Hut (4200m).
Day 11: An early start for the ascent to Point Lenana (4985m), the trekkers summit on Mt. Kenya. We enjoy sunrise over Africa and descend to Shipton's Camp for lunch. From here we make our descent via the Sirimon Route and over a ridge to the Liki North Hut (3993m) where we set up camp for the night.
Day 12: A nice easy day today as we rejoin the main trail and then descend to Sirimon Gate (2440m) where we camp for the night. Our final night is a great opportunity for interaction with the crew who will no doubt entertain everyone with songs and dancing!
Day 13: After breakfast we meet with our vehicles and drive to Naro Moru where we set up camp by the river. In the afternoon we'll visit Sweetwaters Game Reserve where with luck we'll get to see all of the `Big Five`. Overnight at Naro Moru.
Day 14: In the morning, we will visit a local market for some souvenir shopping before making the return drive southwards to Nairobi airport for the return flight to the UK, which normally departs in the late evening.
