A passport (with at least 6 months remaining validity) is required. All nationalities need to obtain a visa for entry into Ethiopia. If you are a passport holder from one of the countries listed below, the easiest way to obtain your visa is on arrival at Addis Ababa. If you prefer to obtain your visa in advance this is possible. In this case you should contact the Embassy of Ethiopia in your own country.
At the airport you will need 50 US dollars cash for your visa. In Dec 2011 passport photos were not required, but we recommend taking along 2 passport photos just in case. You will also be required to fill out a visa application form which can be obtained at the airport. Note that the form provided for visa applications in advance from an Ethiopian Embassy is different and cannot be used at the airport. Please note that sometimes it is necessary to queue for a short time whilst awaiting visa issue on arrival at the airport.
Passport holders of the following countries can obtain a visa for Ethiopia on arrival at Addis Ababa airport:
Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea Republic, Kuwait, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Russian Federation, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, United States.
If your passport is issued by a country which does not appear on this list you must contact the Ethiopian embassy or mission which deals with your country.
We do keep our information up to date but be advised visa requirements are subject to change.
It is recommended that you contact the relevant embassy in case of recent alterations.
