For natural abundance and sheer variety of landscape and culture, few places on earth can rival Sri Lanka. This exceptional School Adventure itinerary includes the chance to make educational visits to many of Sri Lanka's historical and archaeological highlights, such as the natural rock fortress of Sigiriya and the former capital of Kandy. It also features a selection of day-hikes; in the Knuckles Range, on the Horton Plains and on sacred Adam's Peak (2243m / 7402ft), where a midnight start allows us to experience sunrise at the summit. As a fitting end to this fantastically varied adventure, we have a day at the relaxed coastal resort of Marawila, north of Colombo.

Educational perspective

Tea plantations are a distinctive element of the landscape in Sri Lanka's highlands. Introduced by the British in the mid 19th century, 'Ceylon Tea' remains an important cash crop.

Amend or Extend

Allow more time for project work, or include a day's whitewater rafting on the Kelani River, at the place where Bridge on the River Kwai was filmed.

This School Adventure is not a long or sustained trekking trip. When devising this itinerary, our intention was to make the best of the varied hiking which Sri Lanka has to offer. To that end, we have included a number of day-walks. The altitudes attained are never sufficiently high to cause problems with acclimatisation and the underfoot conditions are generally good, on tracks and trails through tea plantations and forest and between villages. We may encounter some slippery conditions on forest trails.  There are 7 days when we do a significant amount of walking, averaging 5 to 6 hours on each of these days.  Probably the toughest of the days, because we do the hard bit at night and in the dark, is the ascent of Adam's Peak, involving 4 hours up and 2 hours down on an unrelenting series of more than 3000 steps. Each KE School Adventure is given a grade, taking into account the amount of walking involved, the difficulty of the terrain, the remoteness, the altitude and the overall length of the trip. The trips are graded on a scale from 1 to 10, with 10 being the most challenging. We have graded this trip ‘4' due to the low altitude and the non-continuous nature of the walking.
