A magnificent trekking discovery of the ancient Incan Empire! Walking the quieter Salkantay Trail to Machu Picchu, this scenic journey starts at former Incan capital of Cusco and finishes on the waters of Lake Titicaca. Landing in Cusco, this vibrant city boasts an incredible combination of colonial and Incan grandeur. With a day to acclimatize, we explore Cusco before heading into the Sacred Valley to the start of our trek. A lesser-walked trail, we hike through Andean communities, across high mountain passes (Salkantaycasa 4600m) and through cocoa plantations, passing forgotten ruins along the way. With a short transfer by train to the village of Aguas Caliente, we spend a day at Machu Picchu to discover this most magnificent of Incan ruins. Rounding-off this Peruvian discovery is a journey to the Lake Titicaca. High on the Andean altiplano, divided between Peru and Bolivia, we take a visit to the traditional Uros Island communities and tour the waters of South America's largest lake. A fitting end to this epic walking holiday of Andean exploration.

Is this holiday for you?

Starting in Cusco, there is time to acclimatise before beginning the focal point of this holiday; The Salkantay Trail, a 5 day, 4 night camping-based trek. Following rocky trails and agricultural paths, there is lots of variety on this holiday. From the lower valleys to high altitude mountain passes (4638m), our days are well-paced on this straightforward but demanding trek. With the process of acclimatisation through Cusco and having completed the trekking phase should ensure we are in good condition when visiting the high-altitude Lake Titicaca. Although during the trek we will be staying in tents, there are a number of nights in simple but comfortable accommodation. Although the ascents provide no real difficulties and should be within the capabilities of fit and active hill walkers, the longer trekking days coupled with the altitude sustained on this trip can be strenuous.
