Tour of the Matterhorn - Walking Holiday
Holiday Itinerary
Day 1: Rendezvous at the group hotel in St. Niklaus. KE Land Only package services begin with dinner and overnight at the hotel.
Day 2: Cable car up to the hamlet of Jungen, then trek to the Augustbordpass for great views. A pleasant, wandering path then leads through a rocky cirque and down to Gruben.
Day 3: A steady hike to the collection of chalets at Obstaffel, then we cross the Meidpass and trek via a high valley to the Hotel Weisshorn. Onwards and upvalley, then steeply down to Zinal.
Day 4: The Sorebois cable car takes us to the col of the same name, beyond which we descend to Lac Moiry and climb to the Col de Torrent. Then downhill via forest and meadow to La Sage.
Day 5: An easier day, via the chalets at La Gouille and a lunch stop at picturesque Lac Bleu. Then a scenic traversing path takes us to our next overnight halt at Arolla.
Day 6: This is an excellent high mountain day, as we ascend by way of the Arolla Glacier to the Col Collan, with some exciting sections of trail. Overnight at the Prarayer Refuge.
Day 7: An easy start, then a rocky trail with sections of ladder and cable leads to the Col de Valcournera. After a similarly interesting descent, we take the post bus to Breuil - Cervinia.
Day 8: An undulating climb over easy terrain to the Col Theodule, with views of the Matterhorn. Then a glacial descent to Gandegg and easier path onward to Zermatt.
Day 9: The first day of the new Europaweg path takes us beneath the mighty Dom and above the Mattertal Valley to the spectacularly situated refuge of the Europahutte.
Day 10: Another superb walk today, on a high trail beneath imposing cliffs. There are river crossings and great views, before a final descent to Grachen and a bus ride to the hotel in St. Niklaus.
Day 11: KE Land Only package services end with breakfast at the hotel.
