Holiday Itinerary

Day 1: Rendezvous at the group hotel in Kathmandu. Complimentary airport transfers provided for all clients. KE Land Only package services begin with dinner and overnight at the group hotel.

Day 2: A free day in Kathmandu, with a half-day sightseeing tour of some of the city's unmissable sights, such as Swayambhunath, Pashupatinath and Bodhnath. A second night at our Kathmandu hotel.

Day 3: After breakfast, we set off on a spectactular 5-hour drive through the foothills of the Himalaya to Dharidunga (2500m), situated in classic 'Middle Hills' territory between the valleys of the Bhote Kosi and Tama Kosi rivers. We camp on the outskirts of the village.

Day 4: Our first day of trekking takes us above the highest of the farms in the area and onto the Dandar Ridge, where we camp at a grazing area known as Chauri Kharka after 5 hours of walking.

Day 5: An easy day, we should reach our camp at Koori on the Kalinchok Danda by lunch time. 4 hours of walking.

Day 6: We countour around above the headwaters of the Sangawa Khola to reach Tharebhir, the highest village in the valley at 2500 metres, where we camp.

Day 7: Crossing a low pass to reach the valley of the Amatal Khola, we hike up to Bigu Gompa (2310m) which is a beautiful monastery, home to 100 nuns, followers of the Buddhist Kargyupa sect. We camp close to the monastery.

Day 8: Taking a gradual descent to the village of Rupthang, we then have a steady climb through open forest of prickly-leafed oak and rhododendron to reach the Tinsang La. We camp just 10 minutes or so before the pass. Great views from the pass and from the nearby hill known as Tinsang Ri (3600m).

Day 9: Up at dawn to catch the views from the pass and plenty of time to hike to the viewpoint hill. We then make the easy 3 to 4 hour descent to the village of Dolangsa.

Day 10: Another easy day, walking downhill through farmland and villages, to our meeting with the Bhote Kosi at the bazaar town of Barabise. From here, it is just a short walk to our overnight accommodation at the Borderlands Resort.

Day 11: We have a full briefing from professional river guides and are kitted out with safety gear, before setting out in our specialist rafts. We enjoy rapids with names such as 'Frog in a blender' and 'Exlax' en route to the take out just before Barabise. We drive back to our resort accommodation.

Day 12: We transfer back to our previous take out point and raft a lower stretch of the river to Lamosangu, with more exotically named rapids, like 'Liquid Bliss' and 'Dazed and Confused'. In the afternoon, we drive back to the Borderlands, where we have time to sort out our bikes.

Day 13: Starting off downhill on good tarmac, the valley scenery is beautiful. There are a couple of good downhill sections and some climbs to endure, cruelly finishing with a long, long drag up to Dhulikel, perched on the very rim of the Kathmandu Valley. We check in at a hotel and enjoy the sunset views across the Himalayas.

Day 14: An easy final day, as we choose the quietest roads for our journey down to our hotel in Kathmandu. The afternoon is free for further independent sightseeing, souvenir buying or just to relax by the hotel pool.

Day 15: KE Land Only package services end after breakfast. Complimentary airport transfers are provided.

Altitude

This holiday involves going to high altitude. During the course of your trip you will reach altitudes in excess of 3500 metres. This is not something that you should worry about; the human body is quite capable of adapting to a very wide range of altitudes, but it is important that we follow some simple rules in order to acclimatise successfully. Before coming on this holiday you should read the advice on trekking at high altitude.
