This wonderful walking holiday covers the very best of Cappadocia, with 6 days of relaxed walking and visits to some of the area's unforgettable highlights. Situated in the heart of Turkey, Cappadocia offers a fairytale landscape of troglodyte houses, rock-cut churches, beautiful valleys and amazing volcanic fairy chimneys. Basing ourselves in two contrasting areas ensures we see the very best of the region and means each day's walk can be opted in our opted out. We start out with a walk in the Ihlara valleys close to Guzelyurt, walking through a surreal landscape of strangely eroded volcanic rock and colourful fairy chimneys. We then visit the magnificent 'Swiss cheese' underground city of Derinkuyu. Once home to over 10,000 people, this amazing labyrinth is a defiant highlight of any holiday to Cappadocia. Next is the UNESCO open-air Goreme Museum, an amazing vast complex of frescoed cave churches and monasteries decorated with some of the best frescoes in the country. Scenic hikes in the beautiful 'Red' and 'Rose' Valleys take us through a wonderful world of rock-hewn dwellings and churches carved out by Christian communities of the 9th - 11th centuries. Whilst walking amongst the picturesque vineyards and toadstool-like 'fairy chimneys' of the White Valley, we also climb to the 'Citadel' at Uchisar for far reaching views of this incredible landscape. With a mix of lovely walks, atmospheric accommodation and great food, this is quite simply a superb holiday in a magical part of Turkey. If you're looking for a walking holiday which includes wonderful food, the warm hospitality of the Turkish people, fantastic accommodation and a wonderful variety of walks and local highlights, then this is the perfect walking holiday.
Is this holiday for you?
The central Turkish region of Cappadocia cosists of a high plateau at around 1000 metres elevation, above which rise a number of volcanoes of which, Mount Erciyes (3916m) near Kayseri is the tallest. Historically ash deposits from these volcanoes accumulated to great depths and it is this material that has been eroded to create the wild rock formations for which Cappadocia is famous. The region also has an incredibly rich history and the combination of geography and history makes it one of the most distinctive and attractive travel destinations in Europe. Based at 2 different hotels, we will make a thorough exploration of the area, transferring to the most interesting places, combining short hikes (3 to 4 hours) with sightseeing visits and cultural experiences. This is an easy walking holiday and accesible to anyone who keeps themselves reasonably fit.
