This superb one week walking holiday follows the Lycian Way on the beautiful Lycian Peninsula which is part of Turkey's Turquoise Coast, a region famous for its wonderfully rugged scenery, friendly people and great archaeological interest. From our rendezvous in Antalya, we initially head west to enjoy some of the best hiking at the Western end of the Lycian Way along the coast from Oludeniz to Kabak. We take a boat out on the Mediterranean to visit Kekova island and the hill-top castle of Simena, before transfering to the eastern section of the Lycian Way where we walk the simply stunning coastal path to the picturesque Cape Gelidonia, with its iconic lighthouses and sharks fin islets. We complete the Lycian Way with a climb to the `Flames of Chimeara` and a descent to Cirali where we can see the atmospheric ancient city of Olympos. During the walks we pass through summer shepherds' settlements and small villages where life proceeds at a seductively sedentary pace, and discover hidden bays, pirates' caves and deserted beaches - perfect for swimming. This is a relaxed adventure walking holiday on the beautiful Mediterranean Coast, following Turkey's most famous footpath on its most desirable coastline!
Is this holiday for you?
The Lycian Way is a waymarked trail, which follows a mix of dirt roads, tracks and trails and underfoot conditions are generally very good. The holiday includes five day-hikes on the best sections of both the western and eastern Lycian Way. The time spent walking each day will vary depending on other activities such as swimming and vists to interesting sights along the way. On most walking days there will be approximately 4 hours of hiking except during the section of the Lycian Way on Cape Geledonia which will take us around 6 or 7 hours. There is a fair amount of up and down, although this is a predominantly low level walk. With 3 nights at Fethiye and 2 at Andrasan, we have kept changes of hotels to a minimum and the format of the holiday means that group members will carry just a small day-sack during the walking.
