This one-off trekking and climbing adventure to the peaks of the Tsum Valley in Nepal, offers the chance to go exploring with former KE 'Leader of the Year' and Climb magazine's Gear Editor, Tom Richardson. Sandwiched between two great Himalayan ranges, Manaslu and Ganesh, the Tsum Valley is one of the hidden gems of Nepal. Beyond Mu Gompa, the tributary valleys and peaks which rise above Tsum are relatively untrodden and the purpose of this reconnaissance trek is to explore this region and to climb the technically straightforward Tabsar Peak (6065m). From the lower reaches of the great Burhi Gandaki, we trek through the steep sided, lush valley of the Shiar Khola which then opens out unexpectedly to reveal a wide level valley filled with Tibetan style villages, surrounded by field strips and neat stone walls. The valley is surrounded by steep walls and peaks from which glaciers flow down to within a few hundred metres. After acclimatising here we begin our exploration of the upper valleys and glaciers where very few people have trekked. We aim to climb one or more of the peaks in this region which have recently been de-regulated by the Nepal government including the 6065 metre Tabsar. If you want a trekking and climbing adventure in Nepal that goes beyond the ordinary, join Tom on this holiday of a lifetime.
Is this holiday for you?
Generally, the underfoot conditions during the trek into the main Tsum Valley are straightforward being mostly on established trails. Beyond Mu Gompa, we will encounter sections of loose scree, rocky paths and glacial moraine. The climbing encountered will be mostly technically straightforward on snow slopes of less than 45 degrees where one axe is sufficient. We will traverse snow-covered glaciers as a roped party and we may encounter steeper snow slopes where it will be necessary to use fixed lines to safeguard ascent and descent. Full instruction on the use of fixed lines and glacier crossing will be given during the trip and previous experience of these techniques is not a prerequisite. However, all participants should have previous experience of walking with crampons and should know how to self-arrest using an ice axe. Previous experience of trekking to altitudes of at least 5000 metres is highly recommended and clients should be physically fit and prepared for the rigours of climbing up to 6000 metres. This is an exploratory trek and a degree of flexibility towards the itinerary and objectives of the trip are essential. This holiday will appeal to experienced trekkers and mountaineers with a sense of adventure who enjoy getting off the beaten trail.
