Far out in the South Pacific Ocean, 1750 kilometres east of Australia, the Vanuatu archipelago comprises more than 80 islands of volcanic origin. Its colourful mix of people, speaking a multitude of languages, are reckoned to be the happiest on Earth. Arriving at Port Vila on Efate, our island-hopping exploration takes us to picturesque villages, with day-hikes through rainforest and along coastlines decorated with white sand beaches and sapphire blue lagoons. On the largest of the islands, Espiritu Santo, we hike on jungle trails through an unspoiled landscape to Millennium Cave. Then, on Ambrym, we have a 2-day walk to the crater rim and lava lakes of the active volcano, Marum (1230m). We also visit Tanna Island, where we walk across ash fields to reach the top of Yasur, the most accessible of the world's very fiery volcanoes. Offering a blend of adventure, culture and wild, untouched nature, Vanuatu will make you happy, too!
This trip is one of our ‘Explore More' range of outstanding adventure holidays which we are running in conjunction with our friends at Hauser (Germany's leading adventure travel operator). The holidays we have chosen for this range are undoubtedly some of the finest adventures on the planet. They are also ‘specialist' and will appeal to those who have ‘been there, done that' in many parts of the world and are now looking for something new. The cosmopolitan nature of the groups will be an important part of the Explore More experience!
Is this holiday for you?
Most of the walks in this tour are relatively straightforward, and within the range of any fit and regular hill walker. However, the hike on day 8 through Millennium Cave is a more testing excursion, with descent into the gorge (and ascent out of it) on bamboo ladders requiring a head for heights. Once you enter the Millennium Cave, underfoot conditions are difficult with large boulders to negotiate. The 2-day ascent of Mts Benbow and Marum on Ambrym will also be more difficult, with up to 700m of ascent on each day. For this reason we have graded the trip as GREEN within our grading system. Large parts of the islands of Vanuatu - Efate, Espiritu Santo, Ambrym and Tanna - are isolated and unaffected by tourism, particularly when you venture inland from the coast. Many villages have no communications or access to electricity so you must be prepared for basic facilities in some places. There is a lot of travelling within the itinerary - necessary to include all the destinations - and you must be prepared for this also.
