Formed by volcanoes, the Indonesian island of Java has one of the most dramatic landscapes on earth. Journeying across the eastern part of the island of Java, this trekking holiday explores all of this great diversity, from tropical rainforest to dry savannah and from colourful wildlife to a vibrant cultural tapestry. Our unique and exciting walking holiday includes hiking as many as 5 of the biggest and most active volcanoes in Java. We start out on Semeru (3676m), the highest peak on the island and continue by way of spectacular Bromo, before making a continuous 4-day trek traversing the peaks of Argopuro (3088m) and Rengganis (3028m). We follow this with a 2-day trek to a high point on the caldera of Mount Raung (3332m) which has the largest crater in Java at 2 km in diameter. Travelling eastwards, we trek to the crater of Kawah Ijen where miners famously extract  chunks of poisonous yellow sulphur from an acid lake. Crossing by ferry to the paradise island of Bali we end this volcano trekking holiday with two days to chill out and enjoy the beaches at Lovina and Jimbaran Bay. This superb Java trekking holiday will appeal to anyone who likes a mix of exotic culture, volcanoes and hgh adventure.

Explore More

This trip is one of our ‘Explore More' range of outstanding adventure holidays which we are running in conjunction with our friends at Allibert and Hauser (France and Germany's leading adventure travel operators). The holidays we have chosen for this range are undoubtedly some of the finest adventures on the planet. They are also ‘specialist' and will appeal to those who have ‘been there, done that' in many parts of the world and are now looking for something new. The cosmopolitan nature of the groups will be an important part of the Explore More experience!

Is this holiday for you?

This trip involves some DEMANDING trekking on a variety of underfoot terrain including jungle trails, village paths and steep and loose volcanic scree. There are several long days (8 to 9 hours of walking), with the 4-day hike via the summit of Argopuro being the most challenging part of the trip. The moderately high altitudes will have some effect on physical performance but there are no prolonged periods at high altitude. Group members should have a good level of physical fitness for this trip and equally a good sense of adventure.
