Geography
Indonesia lies between the mainland of South-East Asia and Australia in the Indian and Pacific oceans. It is the world's largest archipelago state. There are more than 17,000 islands in the Republic of Indonesia, including Sumatra, Java and parts of both Borneo and New Guinea. Both Hindu and Buddhist kingdoms have flourished here over a period of 1500 years and the region has been important on the trade route between India and China for all of that time. Across such a widespread geography, there are numerous distinct ethnic groups and the national motto is 'bhinneka tunggal ika' (many, yet one). Located on the 'Pacific Ring of Fire' this part of the world is blessed with a super-abundance of volcanoes, both active and dormant. From Java, through to Lombok and Bali, these peaks are particularly impressive and provide brilliant trekking objectives for adventurous travellers.

Language
The official language is Indonesian (locally known as Bahasa Indonesia), a modified version of Malay but most Indonesians speak local languages such as Javanese, as their first language. English is taught in elementary schools so many people you meet will be able to communicate at some level. We recommend that you take a phrase bool and learn some common greetings. Any attempt to speak the lcal language is likely to get you a warm smile.
Climate
Lying on the equator, the temperature in Indonesia is relatively high year-round. We can expect daytime temperatures at lower elevations to be as high as 34°C / 93°F with high humidity. During the treks and climbs in the mountainous areas, the daytime temperature will be a very pleasant 20°C / 68°F with less humidity also. At night in the mountains the temperatures can drop surprisingly low, sometimes reaching or even dipping below freezing point. Bali receives most of its rainfall between December and February. In the dry season which extends from May to November we can expect sunshine on most days. Occasional rainfall can occur in the dry season but this tends to be during the night or in the early morning.
Currency
Indonesia Currency is the Rupiah (Rp). Rupiah Notes are 100, 500, 1,000, 5,000, 10,000, 20,000, 50,000, 100,000 and Coins 25, 50, 100, 500, 1000.
Visa Requirements
A valid passport (with at least 6 months remaining validity) and a visa for Indonesia are required. Citizens of the UK, USA, Canada and most EU countries can obtain their visa (30 day stay only) on arrival at a cost of approximately US$25. Other nationalities should check their situation individually. Up-to-date information will be sent to you when we confirm your booking.
Vaccinations
You should attend your own doctor and dentist for a check-up. Your doctor will have access to the most up to date information on the required vaccinations for the country you are visiting. In general we recommend vaccinations against the following: Polio, Tetanus, Typhoid, & Hepatitis ‘A'. Malaria prophylaxis is recommended for this trip. Yellow Fever vaccination is not required unless arriving from an endemic area.
