This superb cycle journey through Vietnam's mountainous north-west highlights the country's lush, exotic landscape, whilst also providing a mix of great riding on backroads and off-road trails. Starting out from Hanoi, we take the overnight train to the picturesque former hill-station of Sapa. Here, we have the chance to stroll around the fascinating local-produce market and to ride some amazing mountain trails beneath Fansipan, Indochina's highest peak. As we pass from village to village, it's a real treat to meet people of several different ethnic groups, each with their own, distinctive and colourful clothing. Beyond the Tram Ton Pass (1900m), Vietnam's highest road, our undulating route takes us through a remote area that sees few outside visitors and where the scenery is out of this world. Stopping off for a rest day at Dien Bien Phu (where Ho Chi Minh defeated the colonial French in 1954) gives us the chance to learn more about the Vietnamese way of life and to do some exploration. Crossing the Pha Din Pass on switchbacks, more great riding across a land of emerald-green rice paddies, tea plantations, rivers and valleys, brings us closer to Hanoi, with a memorable overnight en route at a luxurious lodge in Mai Chau. Well off the tourist trail, this captivating journey has something for every cyclist.
