Trekking Mount Toubkal in Winter
Morocco, Trek & Walk, 8 days - from £495 (land only) - from €795 (land only) - from $865 (land only)
Day 1: Rendezvous at the group hotel in Marrakech. Complimentary airport transfers are provided for clients arriving on this day. Depending on your arrival time you may wish to explore the heart of Marrakech and the magical UNESCO Djemaa-el-Fna, plus surrounding souk. KE Land Only package begins with the evening meal.
Day 2: Morning sightseeing around the Djema el-Fna and souks with an English-speaking guide. After lunch, we drive the short distance to Imlil and get to stretch our legs with a brief walk to the start point of our trek at and our welcoming gite in Ait Souka, where we overnight.
Day 3: Today we have an acclimatisation day in and around the pretty Imlil Valley. Various walk options are available today and the leader will decide depending on the ability of the group. One option is to trek up to a col at 2660 metres in the nearby Mezzik Valley. We return to spend a second night at our gite in Ait Souka. Walk distance approx: 5 - 6 hours depending on walk chosen.
Day 4: Setting of towards Toubkal, our trek takes us via the village of Aroumd and on to the small settlement and shrine at Sidi Chamharouch. Here, the valley steepens and we continue the ascent to reach the Neltner Refuge (3207m) - Toubkal Basecamp, which will be our accommodation for the next 3 nights. Walk distance approx: 6 - 7 hours depending on snow conditions.
Day 5: We now have two big mountain days ahead of us and the guides will decide in which order we tackle the peaks. Toubkal is our main objective but if the weather is stable we may opt to first make an ascent of Ouanoukrim (4089m), a straightforward climb with a final scramble to reach the top and a summit that offers fantastic views of Toubkal and surrounding peaks. Walk distance approx: 6 - 8 hours.
Day 6: If we have opted to save North Africa's highest peak for today, we will make an early start for the steep ascent to the summit of Jebel Toubkal (4167m). After time to enjoy the spectacular panoramic views and take the all important `summit photos,` we return to the Neltner Refuge for a final night. Walk distance approx: 6 - 8 hours depending on snow conditions.
Day 7: After breakfast, we leave the refuge and trek down the valley to our gite in Ait Souka. Here, we have lunch and then drive back to Marrakech, arriving in the late afternoon and check in at the group hotel. We then head out to experience the colourful Djemaa-el-Fna before enjoying a celebration dinner in Marrakech.
Day 8: KE group package services end after breakfast. Complimentary airport transfers are provided for clients departing on this day.
This holiday involves going to high altitude. During the course of your trip you will reach altitudes in excess of 3500 metres. This is not something that you should worry about; the human body is quite capable of adapting to a very wide range of altitudes, but it is important that we follow some simple rules in order to acclimatise successfully. Before coming on this holiday you should read the advice on trekking at high altitude.
