Trekking Mount Toubkal in Winter
Morocco, Trek & Walk, 8 days - from £495 (land only) - from €795 (land only) - from $820 (land only)
Day 1: Rendezvous at the group hotel in Marrakech. Complimentary airport transfers are provided for clients arriving on this day. KE group package services begin with the evening meal. Depending on your flight arrival time, after settling in you may have the opportunity to do a little exploration. The trip leader will give a briefing during dinner about the exciting week ahead.
Day 2: Morning sightseeing around the Djema el-Fna and souks with an English-speaking guide. After lunch, we drive to Imlil and make the short walk to the start point of our trek at Ait Souka. The area around Imlil was used as the backdrop for parts of the major Hollywood movie, 'Kundun' with the old kasbah above the village made to look like a Tibetan temple. After a short walk we check into our gite.
Day 3: Today is a well planned acclimatisation day in and around the Imlil Valley and to help with this process, we`ll take a day walk above the village. Various options are available and the leader will decide on the best option, dependant on the group and snow conditions. We return to spend a second night at our gite in Ait Souka, where we will have a briefing over dinner.
Day 4: An exciting morning as we set off towards Mount Toubkal. Our route takes us via the village of Aroumd and on to the small settlement and shrine at Sidi Chamharouch. Here, the valley steepens and we continue the ascent to reach the Neltner Refuge (3207m) which will be our accommodation for the next 3 nights. Although basic, the refuge has bathrooms and showers and a couple of large dining areas.
Day 5: We now have two big mountain days ahead and the guides will decide in which order we tackle the peaks. Toubkal is our main objective but if the weather is stable we may opt to first make an ascent of Ouanoukrim (4089m), a straightforward ascent with a final scramble to reach the summit which offers fantastic views of Toubkal. We return to the Neltner refuge.
Day 6: If we opted to save North Africa's highest peak for today, we will make an early start for the steep ascent to the summit of Jebel Toubkal (4167m). There are fantastic views of the snow covered peaks of the High Atlas away to the north-east, of the Anti Atlas and the Sahara to the south. from the summit. After time to enjoy the panoramic views we return to the Neltner Refuge for a final night.
Day 7: After breakfast, we leave the refuge and trek down the valley to our gite in Ait Souka. Here, we have lunch and then drive back to Marrakech. After checking in at the group hotel, the rest of afternoon is free for sightseeing or shopping in the souks. We will regroup in the evening and head out for dinner in Marrakech to round off the perfect week.
Day 8: KE group package services end after breakfast. Complimentary airport transfers are provided for clients departing on this day.
This holiday involves going to high altitude. During the course of your trip you will reach altitudes in excess of 3500 metres. This is not something that you should worry about; the human body is quite capable of adapting to a very wide range of altitudes, but it is important that we follow some simple rules in order to acclimatise successfully. Before coming on this holiday you should read the advice on trekking at high altitude.
