This very special Moroccan trekking adventure begins with a drive south from Marrakech, across the Atlas and through the Draa Valley, to a fixed camp amongst the palm groves at Ouled Driss. Here, we meet our Berber cook team and Saharan camel drivers and set off on an unforgettable journey into the desert. Walking for around 6 hours a day we stop for leisurely lunches in shady spots and camp each night on the open sand of the dunes - beneath star-filled Saharan skies. Taking tea with our local crew around camp fires, hiking on little-used trails and watching the sun set between the highest dune-crests are all part of this magical desert holiday. From starting out on the dry bed of the Draa River to reaching the highest point of the great dunes of Zahar, this is a winter walking holiday with a difference.
Edge of Sahara Trek or Dunes of the Sahara Traverse - which one is for me?
We offer two fantastic desert treks in Morocco and are often asked "what are the main differences between the two." If you are looking to hike to the highest sand dune in Morocco by traversing across the desert, trek for between 5 - 6 hours a day, experience 1 night at a fixed Berber camp and 4 nights of wild desert camping, then Dunes of the Sahara Traverse is perfect for you. However, if you're looking to move up a grade, hiking for between 6 - 7 hours a day, trek through some of the Sahara's most dramatic scenery, watch the sunset from the dunes of Erg Ez-Zahar, wild camp for 3 nights and experience a fixed camp for 2 nights, then our Edge of Sahara Trek ticks all those boxes.
Is this holiday for you?
This holiday involves walking for 6 to 7 hours each day over a variety of terrain from hard rock to soft desert sand. All our camping and personal equipment is carried by camels so it is only necessary to carry a small daypack with daily essentials such as water bottle and camera. Winter daytime temperatures in the desert are not too hot and walking at this time of year should be quite comfortable. We camp in the desert for 3 nights and at a fixed camp with shower facilities for 2 nights.
