Yukon, Alaska and the Gold Rush

- A Yukon day-hiking adventure in the footsteps of Jack London
- Backcountry hikes in bear country
- Outstanding wilderness landscapes
- Skagway and Haines on the Taiya Fjord
- Dawson City and its gold prospecting history
More than twice the size of Great Britain and with a population of just 35,000, the wilderness territory of the Yukon is the focus of this radical day-hiking adventure holiday. During the course of this wide-ranging walking holiday, we twice cross into Alaska, firstly to Skagway and the Klondike, where we trek up to Lost Lake and Mount Ripinsky. Travelling back into Canada, we spend several days walking in the stunning Kluane National Park, where our hiking objectives include Sheep Mountain and the exciting summit of Mount Decoeli (2300m). Heading north on the Top of the World Highway, we cross the Yukon River on a ferry to reach Dawson City, once home to 40,000 ‘Gold Rush' miners. Finally, on our loop back to Whitehorse, we stop off for further hiking in the Tombstone Mountains and at Two Moose Lake. A fantastic walking holiday for adventurous trekkers looking to get off the beaten track!
This trip is one of our ‘Explore More' range of outstanding adventure holidays which we are running in conjunction with our friends at Allibert and Hauser (France and Germany's leading adventure travel operators). The holidays we have chosen for this range are undoubtedly some of the finest adventures on the planet. They are also ‘specialist' and will appeal to those who have ‘been there, done that' in many parts of the world and are now looking for something new. The cosmopolitan nature of the groups will be an important part of the Explore More experience!
Is this holiday for you?
We have graded this holiday at the upper end of MODERATE. In grading this trip we have taken into account a number of factors including the underfoot terrain and the length the various day walks. We have also taken into consideration the relatively low altitudes attained and the ease with which it is possible to opt out of any of the day hikes. The hikes themselves will vary from easy walks of 3 - 5 hours along lake shores or following forest trails, to more challenging hikes of 7 or 8 hours involving some trackless or loose ground or easy scrambling on rocky edges, or over areas where there are no paths. The holiday is suitable for regular hill walkers. There are also a few days when you spend a considerable amount of time in the vehicle.
