Located on the northern coast of South America, Venezuela is the 6th largest of the continent's countries. It borders Columbia to the west, Guyana to the east and Brazil to the south. From its northern coastline, dotted with countless Caribbean beaches, the country extends westwards to the Andes, where the highest mountain is Pico Bolivar (5007m / 16,427ft). Towards the south-west, there are dense rain forests of the Amazon Basin, whilst in the south-east, below the Orinocco river basin, is an area of highland known as La Gran Sabana. It is in this latter region that some of the country's best trekking is found. Here, there is a fantastic landscape of cliffs, canyons and tepuis (table top mountains), the remnants of a vast upland plateau. One of the largest of these tepuis, Roraima (2810m / 9219ft), was the inspiration for Conan Doyle's book 'The Lost World'. Today, it provides the objective for a brilliant week-long trek. Close by, Angel Falls is the world's highest waterfall and one of the most spectacular natural sights in all of South America. An ideal chill-out location as part of any visit to Venezuela is the coral-reef island group of Los Roques.
