Holiday Overview

  • Centre-based accommodation in a comfortable hotel with pool
  • Guided tour of Malta - explore UNESCO-listed Valetta and Mdina
  • Enjoy walks with spectacular coastal scenery and sleepy villages
  • Discover Gozo`s rugged beauty and meet the charming residents

Gozo is Malta's laid-back neighbour and is just perfect for walkers. Our superb new one-week holiday on this gorgeous Mediterranean island explores the coastline of rocky bays and clear blue inlets on foot. Over 4 days of walks we complete a circumnavigation of the island, walking on coastal paths and quiet tracks. Gozo is a small island which has remained largely unspoiled, blessed with a beautiful coastline and the sunny Mediterranean climate. The sea views against the weathered coast are dramatic and inland the landscape is made up of small flat-topped hills that remain verdant through the summer. Wild fennel, carob and oleander are common sights, alongside abundant prickly pear. The coastline is made up of sheer cliff edges, prompting the poet Edward Lear after an 1866 visit to say "I drew every bit of it, walking fifteen or twenty miles a day - its coast scenery may truly be called pomskizillious and gromphiberous, being as no other words can describe its magnificence".

Gozo has a rich history stretching back 5000 years - there are many ancient Neolithic temples on the island - but it is also the island where according to Homer's Odyssey, Odysseus spent 7 years under the captivity of the sea nymph, Calypso. We've also included a full-day trip to Malta to visit the UNESCO World Heritage capital city of Valletta, home of the Knights of St John, with it's imposing Grand Harbour. We will visit the medieval walled town of Mdina, the island's capital during Roman and Arabic times. There's also a free day to spend exploring on your own or relaxing on the beach. Accommodation throughout will be at a comfortable hotel on Gozo. Malta is well-served by a plethora of low-cost airlines that make a sunshine walking break all too accessible!

Is this holiday for you?

The walking on this holiday in Gozo is not particularly difficult or sustained. On each day we will walk for around 4 - 6 hours, with one longer day of up to 7 hours.  The pace will be relatively relaxed and gentle. Average distance will be 12 - 13kms, with only moderate amounts of ascents and descent. We will be walking on a variety of trails from quiet country roads to rough paths along the coast. In general the paths are good with no difficult sections and no degree of exposure, although underfoot conditions are varied. While there is sufficient walking on each day to satisfy regular hikers, it is intended that this should be a relaxing holiday with a gentle pace. Please note that as the holiday is centre-based, all walks are optional.

Holiday Itinerary

  • Meet at Malta Airport. A single transfer by vehicle and ferry is provided to the hotel on Gozo.

KE Land Only package services begin with a group transfer to the group hotel on the island of Gozo. All flights to the Maltese Islands land at Malta International Airport (Luqa). The drive from the airport to the ferry terminal on the north of the island takes around 45 minutes depending on traffic. A 25 minute trip on the ferry takes us past the towering cliffs of the tiny island of Comino, with occasional glimpses of the famous blue lagoon, and provides great introductory views of the green-covered hills and valleys of the south Gozo coastline and the imposing village churches that dominate the landscape. From the delightful harbour of Mgarr it is a 20 minute journey to our harbour side hotel in the holiday resort of Marsalforn on the northern Gozo coast. Our guide for the week will meet us for dinner and give a full briefing on the plans for the week ahead.

  • Walk around the north of the island from Marsalforn to San Lawrence.

We start our circumnavigation of the island from the hotel itself, walking around the seafront of what was once a small fishing village and is now a popular holiday resort dominated by the usual combination of bars, restaurants and holiday apartments. As we walk along the coast road we soon find ourselves in the midst of a unique and surreal landscape; on the landward side are wave-like cliffs sculptured by the power of the sea and the wind and on the seaward side is a low limestone pavement containing hundreds of square and irregular hand cut salt pans where salt has been harvested since the Roman times. We follow the salt pans for almost 2 kilometres before emerging at the hidden gorge of Wied-il-Ghasri where there are steps down to a tiny shingle bay that is continually washed by the incoming turquoise sea. The coast path continues over the exposed rolling cliff tops to emerge at another gorge at Wied-il-Mielah, where an impressive limestone arch survives despite a frequent battering by the sea and wind. We then head inland to the isolated chapel of St Dimitri, dedicated to an early Christian martyr and the site of a famous local legend, before continue through the ancient and charming old village of Gharb - which has both a Basillica and a magnificent parish church - and finishing in the village square at the nearby village of St Lawrence. It is a 15 minute transfer back to the hotel.

  • Walk the rugged west coast of Gozo, from San Lawrence to Xlendi via the Azure Window.

Returning to St Lawrence we follow a winding track between fields and old quarries and then a rock cut path down the cliffs which provide stunning views over the famous geological features at Dwerja. We emerge at the popular Azure Window where a rock column forms an arch with land jutting out from the cliffs, and then on to the nearby Inland Sea, formed by the collapse of an underground cave, from where there is a 70-metre long tunnel which connects to the sea. The Azure Window has formed the backdrop in a number of films and TV series such as The Count of Monte Cristo and Game of Thrones. We follow the coastline uphill past a renovated coastal watchtower with views over Fungus Rock, from where the Knights of Malta harvested a parasitic plant thought to have great medicinal powers. The undulating coast path continues to a headland at Wardija Point where there is a small cave which was a Roman-Punic Sanctuary. We then head inland past a permanent freshwater pool, again dating from Roman times, and into the village of Kercem, from where we follow a steep twisting road down alongside the fertile - and permanently green - Lunzjata Valley before emerging into the Xlendi Valley. It is then a short walk down to our finish at the popular holiday resort of Xlendi. A 20 minute transfer takes us back to the hotel.

  • Guided tour of Malta, including the capital Valletta and historic city of Mdina.

We leave the hotel at 0815 to catch the 0900 ferry to Malta. Our private mini bus transports us to Valletta where we have a couple of hours to explore this unique medieval fortress city accompanied by an experienced tour guide. This will include a walk through the busy roller-coaster streets - all laid out on a neat grid pattern - and we will walk past popular sites such as St John's Cathedral, the Museum of Archaeology, the Grand Master's Palace and the Armoury and also take some time to discover the maze-like back streets of Valletta. We will have a picnic lunch at the Upper Barracca Gardens from where there are fantastic views over the Grand Harbour and the historic Three Cities. After lunch we travel inland for 25 minutes to the historic city of Mdina, and as we approach there are few sites more impressive than the massive honey-coloured stone walls that surround the city perched high on a plateau in the middle of the island. The city is only small and the roads are pedestrianised so we walk through the peaceful narrow alleyways and streets lined by imposing baroque buildings and churches. There will be an opportunity to visit St Paul's Cathedral and other sites in the city, including the recently restored Bastion Gardens before returning to the bus at 1615 for the trip back to the ferry.

  • Walk through the garrigue landscape and follow the coastal paths of the south, from Xlendi to Qala.

We continue our circumnavigation by returning to Xlendi and walking around the headland past another watchtower (and more salt pans) before following the hidden Kantra Valley and re-joining the coast path above the towering cliffs at Bajjada. After a short detour around the outskirts of the village of Sannat, we continue through the ancient garrigue (low growing plants and herbs) landscape of Ta Cenc, where there is evidence of human habitation for over 5,000 years. The cliffs here are an important breeding site for seabirds and provide stunning coastal views across to Comino and Malta. We then follow a track down to the beautiful hidden gorge at Mgarr-ix-Xini where there is a small bay popular with divers. We climb back up to follow the coast path past another watchtower and the site of a fougasse - a mortar made in a circular hole in the rock and filled with gunpowder and stones - before rounding the quiet bay of Xatt L-Ahmar and past Fort Chambray to reach the bustling harbour at Mgarr. From here we walk around the recently opened promenade and along the low level cliff path to the popular bay at Hondoq-ir-Rummien. It is then a short walk up the road to finish at the charming village square in Qala. A 20 minute transfer takes us back to the hotel.

  • Walk via the fishing village of Dhalet Qorret and San Blas Bay from Qala to Marsalforn on the East Coast.

Returning to the village square at Qala, we follow a trackway down to the north coast and round to the delightful old fishing bay of Dhalet Qorret where local fishermen have built boathouse in the soft yellow limestone. Walking uphill away from the bay we follow a rugged coast path which winds underneath the cliffs to the fertile valley of Wied Ir-Rhan where the abundant wild vegetation and deserted gardens form a forgotten green oasis. We climb out of the valley through more garrigue landscape before dropping down into the verdant San Blas Valley where we walk through the sweet aroma of citrus trees down a steep road to the beautiful red sands of tiny San Blas Bay. After a (harder) walk back up, we continue inland before joining the coast road down to the broad expanse of the beautiful red sand beach at Ramla - arguably the best beach in Malta and Gozo. We can have a short swim before we climb back around the outskirts of the village of Xaghra and down the road to our hotel in Marsalforn. This completes our 50 kilometre journey around the island and we will celebrate by enjoying dinner in a local restaurant.

All meals are included (with the exception of lunch on the free day) in the holiday price from dinner on day 1 to breakfast on day 8.

Maltese food is heavily influenced by their close neighbour, Italy. Pasta is often served as a starter, with fish or meat for main course. Cuisine is generally Mediterranean, with lots of olive oil and garlic. Meat is mostly pork, beef and rabbit. Homemade cakes and puddings are very popular and superb local icecream is readily available. Meals are usually accompanied by fresh bread. In the hotel, breakfast will be buffet-style and continental in style, with a choice of cereal, bread, pastries, yoghurt, fruit juices, tea and coffee.

As part of the holiday price we have included the transfer by vehicle and ferry from Malta International Airport to the group hotel in Marsalforn on Gozo. This transfer will depart Malta International Airport at approximately 12 pm. At the end of the holiday a group transfer will be provided from the hotel via ferry and vehicle to Malta International Airport. This transfer will depart in the early morning (to catch the 0730 ferry) of day 8 and will arrive at the airport for around 9am. If your proposed flight schedules do not enable you to take advantage of the group transfer, please contact the KE office. Private transfers can be arranged at reasonable extra cost. It is possible to take public transport to Gozo from the airport, but this involves changing vehicle in Victoria and can take several hours depending on connections for buses and the ferry. We will advise you on the best alternative arrangements to fit with your arrival time.

The group will be accompanied on each of the walks by a local English speaking walking guide. The guide will also join the group at the hotel for dinner on days 1, 3 and 8. A specialist cultural guide will accompany the group on the day trip to Malta on day 4.

Approximately £150 should be allowed for miscellaneous expenses including your bar bills and reasonable tips to your guide and drivers. The local currency in Malta and Gozo is the Euro. By far the easiest way to obtain your travel cash is from ATMs using a credit or debit card, however we do recommend that you purchase some euros before departure. If you intend to buy expensive souvenirs, you should budget accordingly (credit cards can be useful in this respect). Also if you expect to buy considerable quantities of soft drinks, wine or beer, you should make an allowance for this.

Tipping is the accepted way of saying thank you to your guide and local team. Tipping is entirely voluntary and should be dependent on good service. We advise you to tip as a group.

We ask you to restrict your luggage to a single trek bag and a small daypack (large enough to carry your waterproofs, lunch, water and camera each day). There is no weight restriction as such other than that imposed by your international carrier but you will find travelling easier with lighter luggage.

All KE clients will receive a FREE KE trek bag.  These have been specially made to stand up to the rigours of adventure travel.  Your KE bag will be posted to you when your trip is guaranteed to run or on receipt of your booking if the trip is already guaranteed.  If you have travelled with us before and already have a KE trek bag you can select an alternative free gift in the booking process.

This holiday does not involve any significant ascent to altitude.

The following checklist should help you with your packing. As a general rule, you should always try to keep the weight of your equipment to a minimum. Please be aware that you will be required to carry your bag to your room which in some cases may involve flights of stairs.

It makes a lot of sense to spend some time before coming on a walking holiday getting some additional exercise. The fitter you are, after all, the more enjoyable you will find the experience. We would suggest that you adopt a weekly exercise regime leading up to your trip. Running and swimming are good for developing better stamina. Before departure, we suggest that you try to fit in a number of long walks.

As a reputable tour operator, KE supports the British Foreign & Commonwealth Offices ‘Know before you go’ campaign to enable British citizens to prepare for their journeys overseas, and we recommend that all KE travellers take a look at the FCO Travel Advice for their chosen destination on the official FCO website: www.fco.gov.uk. North Americans can also check out the U.S. Department of State website: www.travel.state.gov for essential travel advice and tips.

KE treat the safety and security of all clients as the most important aspect of any trip we organise. We would not run any trip that we did not consider reasonably safe.  Should the FCO advise against travel for any reason, we will contact everyone booked to travel to discuss the situation.  We receive regular updates direct from the FCO and are in constant touch with our contacts on the ground.  If you have any questions about government travel advice, please call our office.
