Holiday Overview

Highlights

  • Trek the mighty four - UNESCO Etna, Stromboli, Vulcano and Lipari
  • Hot springs, volcanoes, white-washed villages and charming Catania
  • The medieval town of Taormina and its beautiful Roman theatre
  • Jet black lavas, turquoise seas, colourful cuisine and ruby wines

An explosive walking holiday on Sicily's beautiful UNESCO Aeolian Islands featuring Mediterranean sunshine, fantastic Sicilian hospitality and the awesome volcanoes of Etna and Stromboli!  Lying off the coast of north-east Sicily, the dramatic World Heritage listed Aeolian Islands are fringed with black sandy beaches and pretty white-washed houses.  Travelling between the islands by ferry and hydrofoil, we are rewarded with fantastic panoramic views of each volcanic island as we arrive by sea!  Our exciting volcanic experience starts out on the beautiful island of Vulcano, where we ascend to the crater rim before enjoying the hot springs.  Next is 2 nights on Lipari, where we take the hydrofoil to the volcanic island of Salina and climb to its high point at Fossa delle Felci (960m).  After Salina we turn our attention towards the magnificent and fiery Stromboli, which should provide an unforgettable highlight of the trip!  Returning to Sicily, we visit the beautiful medieval town of Taormina and also spend a day on Europe's tallest active volcano, UNESCO Mt Etna (3350m).  Exploring from our hotel on the south side of the mountain, amongst lava flows, cinder cones and extinct craters, this grand finale offers a wonderful panorama of the southern coast of Sicily.  If you are looking for an exciting Mediterranean walking holiday, which combines the very best of Italy's spectacular volcanoes and the country's excellent food and wine, then this is the only one to consider!

Is this holiday for you?

This is a real Mediterranean hiking holiday, with a reasonable amount of walking on most days.  We average between 3 and 6 hours walking each day, with between 400 and 900 metres of ascent.  Most of the time, the underfoot conditions are good, following tracks and trails and some sections of maintained pathway.  However, on some parts of our day-hikes, we can also expect to encounter open scree and to cross rocky terrain with no discernable track. The excursion on Stromboli and the exploration on the upper slopes of Mount Etna are the most demanding of the day-hikes.  Participants will carry just a small day-sack during the walking.  This walking holiday is suitable for regular hikers looking for a holiday with a difference.

Holiday Itinerary

  • Meet at the group hotel in Catania. A single transfer from Catania Airport is provided.

We meet at the group hotel in Catania. A single group transfer using public transport will be provided from the airport to the group hotel close to the town centre. Catania is a pleasant town with a number of striking baroque churches and buildings. There is also a wide choice of restaurants, pizzerias and trattorias, one of which will be picked out for our evening meal. KE Land Only package services begin with dinner.

  • Ferry to Vulcano. Trek to Gran Cratere (990m). Hydrofoil onto Lipari.

After breakfast we make the scenic 2-hour drive along the coast road, northwards to the pretty port of Milazzo. From here, we take the hydrofoil (fast ferry) to the island of Vulcano, which is the nearest (most southerly) of the Aeolian Islands and famous for its black beaches and thermal springs. Returning to the shore, there is time to go to the beach and to visit the hot springs. In the late afternoon, we take the 10-minute hydrofoil ride to the adjacent island of Lipari, where we check in at our holiday apartment accommodation.

  • Hydrofoil crossing to Salina. Walk to Fossa delle Felci (960m). Return to Lipari.

Today, we have an excursion by hydrofoil to the 'green' island of Salina which lies just a few kilometres to the north-west of Lipari. Arriving at the port of Rinella, we take a short public bus ride to Val di Chiesa (15 minutes) and the start of our trek on Fossa delle Felci (960m) the highest peak in these islands. This is a pleasant walk through birch and pine woods and after the the descent, we will walk back to the coast. In the afternoon, we will take the hydrofoil back to Lipari and return to our accommodation. If time allows, Lipari's Archaeological Museum is definitely worth visiting. Tonight dinner isn't included which gives the group and the leader the opportunity to decide together which local restaurant to sample together and we feel is all part of the holiday experience.

  • Morning coastal walk on Lipari. Afternoon ferry to Stromboli and optional beach walk.

In the morning, we will make an exploration of a part of the rugged south-west coast of Lipari. Our hike will take us down to the cliffs above the Mediterrenean, with a wonderful view aver Volcano's crater. In the afternoon, we will take the ferry to Stromboli. After checking in at our hotel, there is plenty of time to take a stroll on the island's black volcanic sand beaches. In the evening, we will go out to a pizzeria for dinner.

  • Morning at leisure. Afternoon trek across the slopes of fiery Stromboli!

Before setting off on our exciting climb of Stromboli, there will be free time in the morning to visit the old part of the town or the very interesting Vulcanology Centre. However, our main objective today is to make the challenging ascent of Stromboli's commanding volcano, which is a little smaller than Fossa delle Felci, at 924 metres. This volcano cannot be climbed if a significant eruption is ongoing and the certified volcano guide who is recruited to accompany the group will tell us if we can make the ascent. The climb starts out on a stone track across open grassland, then reaches the upper slopes of mostly lava and ash scree. The round trip takes 6 hours or so. At the crater viewpoint there is almost always smoke and small eruptions with incandescent material being ejected and sometimes significant lava flow. This is accompanied by bangs and rumbles from within the mountain - most impressive. Our evening meal today will be a picnic taken on the mountain and our descent will be in the dark - head-torches required. Returning from the volcano, we spend a second night at the group hotel on Stromboli.

  • Hydrofoil to mainland. Free time in Taormina before driving onto Mount Etna.

No need for an early start today, as we take the late morning hydrofoil back to the port of Milazzo on Sicily. Here, we meet our private transport to Taormina, considered one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, where we have 2 hours of free time for visiting the historical centre and the famous Greek theatre. In the afternoon we continue our transfer up to our hotel, which is located at 1900 metres on the southern slopes of Mount Etna.

  • Depending on Etna’s activity, day hike towards the summit of Etna. Transfer Catania.

Today, we walk out directly from our hotel to make an exploration of the upper slopes of the mountain. Cinder cones and extinct craters are a feature of the desolate landscape of this part of Etna. From our high vantage point on the mountain, there is a wonderful panorama of the southern coast of Sicily. After the hike, we return to our hotel in Catania on the public bus and have a final night at a restaurant in town.

*Please note that owing to the volatility of Mt Etna, the Etna Park Authorities have imposed strict trekking regulations. We are therefore unable to take our walk beyond 2000m. Alternatively, depending on weather and volcanic activity there is an option to hike with an expert volcanic guide beyond 2000m and explore the summit area. This is at an extra cost of approx €85 per person (local cash payment). This excursion is run solely by the Etna Park Authorities and is not part of your KE Adventure tour. The local KE guide does not lead this excursion and will lead the walk as proposed for Day 7 of this itinerary.

Part of the experience of any visit to Sicily and Italy is the opportunity to taste its wonderful cuisine. Breakfasts are continental in style and taken at our overnight accommodation, consisting of tea and coffee, cereals, bread, jam etc.  For lunch, the group will carry items to make up a picnic to enjoy during the day.  Typical local produce such as cheeses, olives, fruits and vegetables, dried meats and biscuits are used.  Dinner is taken at small local restaurants, which gives us a chance to sample traditional Sicilian fare.  Alongisde the food, Sicilian wine is excellent and an important part of any meal!  Sicily and Italy is also famous for its aperitifs, from chilled prosecco to campari, vermouth and cinzano all served over ice.  Don't forget the zesty local limoncello and the famous after dinner fiery grappas!

During the day’s walk, we will carry a daysack which is large enough to pack a lightweight fleece, water bottle, packed lunch and other extras such as cameras etc.. We usually make a fairly early start (breakfast at around 8.00 a.m.) and make the best of the cool morning air. We will walk for between 4 and 6 hours each day, stopping off en-route for a picnic lunch. On arrival at our hotel, there will always be plenty of time to rest, shower and enjoy a drink on the terrasse before we sit down to a full 3 course evening meal.

An experienced, professional, English-speaking local guide will lead the trip. There will be an additional, specialist volcano guide on Stromboli and on Mount Etna.

Approximately €200 should be allowed for miscellaneous expenses, including dinner on Day 3 (allow €15 – 20), as well as drinks (including bottled mineral water). We recommend that you carry your travel money in the form of cash (euros). If you are intending to buy expensive souvenirs, you should budget accordingly. Also, if you expect to buy considerable quantities of soft drinks, wine or beer, you should make an allowance for this. Credit cards can be used in some places on this trip.

Tips do not form part of the wages of local staff but they are very much appreciated. It is important to remember that tipping is voluntary and should be dependent on good service. It is best if the tip is given at the end of the trip by the group as a whole. We recommend that each group member contributes around €10 – 15 to a group pool and that tips are then distributed between the guide and other support staff as the group feels is appropriate. It is a good idea also to have small change for other tips such as in restaurants or for porters carrying your bags at hotels.

There is no weight limit, other than that imposed by the airline. We do ask you to restrict your luggage to one trek bag and one small daypack, however. Please bear in mind that you will have to carry your own bags for short distances when transferring on Hydrofoils. Some clients have found wheeled luggage to be useful on this trip.

All KE clients will receive a FREE KE trek bag.  These have been specially made to stand up to the rigours of adventure travel.  Your KE bag will be posted to you when your trip is guaranteed to run or on receipt of your booking if the trip is already guaranteed.  If you have travelled with us before and already have a KE trek bag you can select an alternative free gift in the booking process.

This holiday involves going to moderately high altitude. During the course of your trip you will reach altitudes in excess of 2500 metres. You can also talk to one of our trekking experts if you have any concerns about altitude. www.keadventure.com/page/altitude.html

For each holiday there is a minimum number of participants required to enable it to go ahead. Once the minimum number is reached, the trip status will change from 'Available' to 'Guaranteed to run'. You can check the trip status for each departure in ‘Dates and Prices’ table. Other than in exceptional circumstances, we will not cancel a trip once it has achieved this guaranteed to run status and so you are free to proceed with your international flight booking and other travel arrangements.

A passport with 6 months remaining validity at the end of your stay is generally required. The information that we provide is for UK passport holders. Please check the relevant embassy or consulate for other nationalities. It is your responsibility to ensure that you have the correct travel documents and visas for your holiday. Visa requirements and charges are subject to change without notice. If you are travelling outside the EU you should have at least 2 blank pages in your passport for each country that you visit.

It makes a lot of sense to spend some time before coming on an active holiday, getting some additional exercise. The fitter you are, after all, the more enjoyable you will find the experience. The best preparation for a trip of this nature is regular walking preferably in the mountains. If regular hill-walking is not possible, a weekly exercise regime (jogging, squash or swimming) will develop cardio-vascular fitness and stamina. Regardless of your excersice regime, we suggest that before departure, you try to fit in a number of long walks in hilly country.

As a reputable tour operator, KE supports the British Foreign & Commonwealth Offices ‘Know before you go’ campaign to enable British citizens to prepare for their journeys overseas, and we recommend that all KE travellers take a look at the FCO Travel Advice for their chosen destination on the official FCO website: www.fco.gov.uk. North Americans can also check out the U.S. Department of State website: www.travel.state.gov for essential travel advice and tips.

KE treat the safety and security of all clients as the most important aspect of any trip we organise. We would not run any trip that we did not consider reasonably safe.  Should the FCO advise against travel for any reason, we will contact everyone booked to travel to discuss the situation.  We receive regular updates direct from the FCO and are in constant touch with our contacts on the ground.  If you have any questions about government travel advice, please call our office.

Sicily and gthe Aeolian Islands have a typically Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and cool, damp winters. The best time to visit is from April to June and from September to October, when temperatures are the most pleasant. At these times of year, daytime temperatures will vary between 20 and 30 degrees centigrade, falling to between 10 and 20 degrees centigrade at night.
